Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I joined RSM's school leaver programme, starting my Level 4 apprenticeship in order to gain my ATT qualification. My day to day role includes the preparation and submission of corporate tax computations, alongside the onboarding and finalising elements of the compliance process. Although this may be the same process for each client, no two clients are the same and different tax issues arise upon every client.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
RSM made my programme enjoyable. The mix of attending study alongside working means you are able to get the real on the job experience of your studies which is great. I found it helps with exam application, and it's always nice when you come to study something that you have already come across while at work. Being given full days out of office without the liability of work on your back while you study means you can gain the right work/study/life balance.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
While working for RSM, both my written and spoken communication skills have improved. Whether this be communicating in office with another team regarding the status of a client, or typing a client email in a professional manner. Communication is also a key part of teamwork, which is another skill which I have developed. Completing tax computations as part of my day to day job requires input from various members of the team, therefore teamwork ensures efficiency and that jobs are not being repeated. Additionally, my problem solving and critical skills have improved. During my day to day role, I am likely to come across various new tax issues which I have yet to come across. Therefore, by taking a proactive role and researching these issues has improved my problem solving skills, leading to asking for help being a second resort.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The RSM early careers team are always helpful with any queries regarding the programme, alongside the separate institutions who we study with. We are always reminded of the different safeguarding practices in place if we feel we need to use them and know who to contact.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The RSM early careers team are always willing to help with any support you may require in your studies, may it be exam stress alongside working or another issue, they are always available to help with any queries.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Our training providers have a separate RSM email at the training provider. Therefore, if you send an email to the training provider with an issue, it isn't likely to get lost in a swarm of other emails, as there is a separate email just for RSM apprentices to enquire about any issues they have.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
As the qualifications we complete are designed to link to our day to day roles, it is pleasing to see where I can pick things up during my studies from work. Sometimes, my studies will pick up on things I am yet to come across in my role. Therefore, I am increasing my knowledge of the different tasks and issues I could come across during my working day by completing my studies.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There is various different extra-curriculars to get involved in, whether these be office/team based events, such as social events outside of work, or firm wide extra curriculars, such as becoming a diversity ambassador

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
Yes
Why?
RSM is a comfortable and flexible place to work, welcoming all new comers. I especially like the 'buddy' programme, where school leavers or graduates coming into a role at RSM will be assigned a 'buddy'. This is someone who already works at RSM who you can go to with all your questions before joining the firm, and who will aid in your welcoming from your first day in office.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
Make sure to be yourself, and ensure you link any skills you highlight in your application to real life examples, as this makes you stand out in the crowd
