Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a Laboratory Analyst at Northumbrian Water, my role involves preparing environmental samples such as soil, water, and sediment for the analysis of semi-volatile organic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons through SV-Scan and PAH preparation. On a day-to-day basis, I receive and log samples, carry out extraction and preparation procedures in line with standard operating procedures, and prepare quality control samples to ensure accurate and reliable results. I also maintain detailed laboratory records, ensure samples are correctly labelled and traceable, and follow strict health, safety, and quality standards while maintaining a clean and organised laboratory environment.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my degree apprenticeship to a great extent as it allows me to combine practical laboratory experience with academic learning. Through my apprenticeship with Northumbrian Water and my studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, I am able to apply the chemical science concepts I learn in my degree directly to my work in the laboratory. This has helped me develop both my technical knowledge and practical skills, particularly in sample preparation and analytical procedures. I find the programme rewarding because it provides real industry experience while working towards a qualification in Chemical Science, which is helping me build a strong foundation for my future career.

I have also improved my attention to detail, time management, and ability to work accurately under laboratory quality and safety standards. In addition, the programme has helped me develop my scientific knowledge in chemical science while gaining practical industry experience, allowing me to apply what I learn in university directly to my day-to-day work.
