Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Every quarter, we hold a planning meeting to review the upcoming content across television, radio, podcasts and events. From this, we identify our priorities and develop multi‑channel marketing campaigns, forming project groups for each one. A typical project group includes a marketing representative known as the brief holder, a Media Planning representative who develops the strategy and schedule, and one or two creative colleagues.
My role within these project teams is to act as a project manager. I create the marketing brief, outlining the key information, target audience and objectives. On a day‑to‑day basis, I monitor campaign progress by arranging meetings with executive producers, liaising with the press office to ensure alignment, checking that deadlines are met and identifying additional marketing opportunities. I also support our events team with branding requirements, which involves working with external suppliers, reviewing visuals and quotes, ordering materials and coordinating payment processes.
If I had to summarise my role in one sentence, I would describe it as a blend of communication, organisation and creativity, always thinking strategically to serve our audience and uphold BBC values.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have really valued my experience with the BBC and I am genuinely enjoying my programme. Joining such a large organisation can be daunting and the imposter syndrome definitely hit at the start. However, I have felt extremely supported by both my skills coach and my team, who have encouraged me to speak up, share my ideas and get involved in opportunities that would have been outside my comfort zone. Everyone has been incredibly supportive of my learning journey, both within and beyond my department. Shadowing different areas has also given me a clearer understanding of the wider business and has strengthened my passion for marketing even further.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
My literacy and editing skills have improved through writing briefs, checking copy and reviewing creative materials. I have also strengthened my communication skills by regularly liaising with producers, press teams, creatives and external suppliers. In addition, the fast‑paced nature of campaigns has helped me grow my critical thinking and problem solving abilities, especially when working under time pressure and adapting to last‑minute changes.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is structured very well. I work four days a week in my role, with one dedicated day set aside for apprenticeship work. On this day, I complete online modules, study materials and work towards my monthly assignments.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a great deal of support from my employer. I have weekly one to ones where we talk through my workload, any pressures I might be experiencing and how I am progressing with my projects. My manager also regularly highlights opportunities for me to learn and grow, and she actively encourages me to take on tasks that push me slightly out of my comfort zone. This has helped me build confidence and develop new skills. I feel very supported day to day, and I know I can approach my team at any time if I need help or advice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I meet with my skills coach every one to two months to review my progress, discuss any challenges and identify where I may need additional support. He is also available on Slack if I have any questions between meetings.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification really helps me perform better in my role. The modules we complete give me a strong understanding of the theory behind what we do in marketing and why certain decisions are made. Being able to apply this learning directly to my day to day work helps me think more creatively and approach tasks from a more strategic perspective. I also feel encouraged to share what I have learnt in my seminars, and I enjoy bringing new ideas back to my team. Overall, the qualification strengthens both my confidence and the quality of the work I produce.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I have attended several networking and social events, which have been a great way to meet people from different teams. I am also part of the apprentice community, where we regularly meet to catch up and support each other. There always seems to be something happening, so there are lots of opportunities to get involved, socialise and build connections across the organisation from the Young Talent Network to the Women in STEM book club.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The BBC values are not just words on paper, they are genuinely reflected in how people treat each other. Everyone I have worked with has been respectful, encouraging and kind. People are truly passionate about what they do, and they are always willing to share that passion to help you learn and grow.
The organisation is also very transparent internally. Staff are invited to take part in Q and A sessions with senior leaders, and people are encouraged to ask honest, even challenging questions. This openness has given me a lot of respect for the BBC, especially as I have been able to see the people behind the content and the effort that goes into everything.
Being part of this environment has made me feel even more motivated, and I hope to continue contributing to the organisation after my apprenticeship.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
My biggest piece of advice is not to limit yourself. I never thought in a million years that I would get an interview for the BBC, and funnily enough I didn’t at first. Someone happened to be unavailable on the interview day and I was asked if I still wanted to take part, and that chance completely changed everything for me. So never rule yourself out.
Take your time with your application. Read up on what the BBC stands for, especially the BBC values, and think about how you show those values in your own life through real examples.
