Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a production apprentice at BBC Radio Gloucestershire. Every day is different; I might be working on different shows in a JC role, helping to film videos for the social media pages, or assisting with planning events.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I get to do a range of different things in my production apprenticeship role, which I really enjoy. As it’s a smaller base, I have the opportunity to work across different departments and gain experience in many areas.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned many new skills while also developing existing ones, such as filming, recording audio and video, and editing this content. I have also gained new experience in areas like event planning.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Overall, the apprenticeship is well structured because I get the opportunity to visit larger bases for training. However, within the smaller base there could be more structure around what I learn and how each week is organised, so that I have clearer plans for what I will be doing each day.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I am given all the support I need, and extra support can be arranged if it is required.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The learning provider arranged by the BBC supports me in my exams by providing extra time and rest breaks to accommodate my dyslexia.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
It is sometimes relevant, but often the training comes after I have already learned the skills in my job. For example, I learned how to use audio equipment in my first month in the role, but I did not receive training from the learning provider until five months into the apprenticeship.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
No

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are a good employer who are always supportive and encourage you to try new things. They are open to helping you explore different pathways within the organisation, as well as giving you opportunities to try things you are interested in within your current role. This makes it easier to develop new skills and gain experience in different areas.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Be yourself. It may sound obvious, but it is the best advice. If you are the right fit for a role, it will show when you are being yourself. If not, then that role may simply not be the right one for you. There are many different roles and opportunities to explore within the organisation, so there are always other pathways you can experience.
