Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I am a production apprentice editing audio, researching for contributors for a show. I have pitched talking points. I have carried out a pre recorded interview. Produced 4 hours of live show with my own content. I have created a 10 minuted podcast from scratch and edited it on Adobe Audition. Gone on outdoor broadcasts in South Yorkshire. Read sports bulletins. Also I have done lots of self directed research and online courses. As well as study for the college side of the apprenticeship.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. When I pitched the idea for my show The Covid Day of Reflection. I was given the freedom to choose elements, contributors, guests speakers. I was then ablto do a reccy and gather information. I also arranged regular updates in meetings withthe JC, Producer and presenter. I was given 4 hours in one week across 4 shows to produce. I got fantastic feedback when it had gone out on air. I felt proud of this achievement.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt so much in 6 months. Audio editing on startrack and adobe auditon. Navigated internal databases. Script writing as each show is different.
I also learnt how to do a confident pitch to potential comissioners.
I created a podcast, I hadn't even listened to one so never dreamt of creating one.
I have been live on air as a guest.
Succeasfully produced my own show from scratch.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Everyone has been supportive, from the placement team, the college tutors at Bauer, to everyone at the station have been incredible. I couldn't have achieved all of what I have said without having fabulous mentors who taught me new skills and shared their knowledge and experience.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

I felt like I was home. Really warm, friendly and welcoming. Didn't feel like the new kid.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

Best decision I have made. I was nervous about stepping away from nursing. But it was a gamble, that has bought me happiness, a sense of development and really rewarding. Loving every minute of it.
