Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work as a production assistant on Asian Network's drivetime radio show, producing schedules, prompt sheets and organising creative content for the show. I also work in the studio during the show every day, working on link-by-link production, overseeing music and creating reports for the show.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy working in such a creative and fast-paced role, where I am trusted with a lot of influence over the programme! And getting to be in the studio every day has been amazing technical experience, to learn how live radio works and how production and presenters work together.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt so many new skills by pursuing an apprenticeship- coming from an academic background studying English Literature, getting to work in an environment where I learn technical, applied skills in fields I have never worked in before has been a joy. My apprenticeship has developed so many of my technical editing and broadcasting skills, as well as my creative skills in writing and devising.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
As a flexi-job apprentice, I work for an independent production company while being employed by the BBC and also trained by Bauer Media. All three of these companies go above and beyond in my apprenticeship to support me, ensuring I have enough time to be working on my apprenticeship assignments amongst my day to day work. My training with all three is structured and consistent, and I have been on several dedicated training blocks which I have really enjoyed!
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The BBC have been incredibly supportive to me during my apprenticeship, helping me to navigate personal issues as well as my professional development. They have been encouraging and supportive towards me pursuing shadowing opportunities with teams outside my own, and have been consistent advertising their safeguarding and employee support services.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider, Bauer Media, have been very supportive in my training and have checked up with me regularly to ensure I am on track. They have also been brilliant with promoting their safeguarding materials and ensuring apprentices' online safety is protected while working remotely.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My training has prepared me for my role in giving me confidence in my technical and professional skills. This has enabled me to gain more responsibility in my role and feel like I can expand on technical skills without needing to rely on my team to give me that baseline experience.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I am beginning to meet with a group of apprentices on social arranged by the BBC. There have also been lots of social events promoted to me, including a Christmas party which I attended.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The BBC have been an amazing employer for the level of experience, skills and trust they have very quickly awarded me in my role. I feel like I am getting top-level experience in an extremely competitive industry, and feel confident in pursuing opportunities in this industry that felt so unavailable to me before. The BBC have demystified everything about my role and emboldened me every step of the way!
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
I would say to be passionate about media, because all of the skills offered by a BBC apprenticeship will appeal to someone who truly loves the industry. No prior experience is required other than that passion, and no one should feel like a BBC apprenticeship isn't for them!
