Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I work within in wealth management in the investment team. No day looks the same - I could by compiling Quarterly Reporting or analyzing data to come to meaningful comparisons. I interreact with colleagues, working in conjunction to work as efficiently as possible. I have also had the opportunity to interact with external actors - requesting key metrics.
I have also had the opportunity to partake in several projects, most notably with interns across solution lines, to support an internal Aon initiative to benefit multicultural colleagues.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes - I was assigned to a few clients where I had real responsibility. Further I had the opportunity to help with new and exciting projects to help deliver Aon's goals and ambitions, notably working on internal recruitment videos.
Most often I was responsible for compiling reports to bring to clients - during my time at Aon I worked on a number of these. I also had the opportunity to communicate with external players that Aon had professional relationships with.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes - the most notable thing to me and my friends is my increased financial literacy. From frequently coming into the office I have been able to learn from colleagues often merely from listening. I have a genuine grasp on key financial terminology and I'm now able to follow fast paced conversations discussing important issues.
Invariably my communication skills have also improved - on a daily basis I communicate with such a wide spectrum of colleagues about a range of issues.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
An abundance! I had a clear structure of who to turn to for support. I had an Aon Controller (A recent grad) who I had weekly meeting with where I was able to ask for feedback, advice and support. Further my manager was always happy to offer support and answer my many questions.
More pertinently, as I frequently came into the office I was able to speak to all the members of my team who were always patient and happy to answer my queries.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very good. The most unique thing at Aon is how long people have worked here. When talking to older colleagues the norm is to have worked here for the majority of their career with upwards of 20+ years.
The culture is one of support and guidance, yet at the same time you are aware it is a competitive business which makes for exciting days in work. There is a sense of community pride when someone in your team succeeds, which again is unique to Aon.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed it a lot, I was able to work in a sector which I had genuine interest in and was given real responsibility. I was also able to learn from my colleagues to build my Aon IQ.
The culture was really good, it was supportive and understanding but at the same time still pushed me to be the best version of myself.
I would definitely go back, the working culture I experienced at Aon is one I aspire to in the future.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Aon
Work hard in the application process! Aon like many other internships has a completive application process, however if you study the business, the market and its competitors, you will have a real advantage in the application process. Try and understand the sheer breadth of Aon and the multitude of services they offer - from pensions to insurance to management consulting and so on.
If you have peers who have completed internships use them - they will have knowledge of the general application process and which questions to prep for.
