Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
During the apprenticeship my day to day has varied, this started as 4 days a weeks in a training facility to learn basic engineering skills like hand fitting, CAD and electronics. I then went on to working on an apprentice only task to use these skills to create the concept for a drone. Following on from this i started my rotation around different placements, this was going around 6 different placements for 4 months. This heavily changed my day to day based on what team i was with.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
Whilst some of the placements have been enjoyable the there is a complete lack of communication between early careers (EC) and us as an apprentice, this has lead to us finding out placements a couple of weeks before we are due to start and has lead to confusion about how processes are going to be completed. This has lead to a large amount of anxiety and confusion from the apprentices and due to the immediate nature of some of these changes has lead to the constant feeling of being on constant watch for the next change. When communicating with EC it feels as though sometimes they aren't even listening to us but just trying to placate us.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
During my time on the scheme i have learnt a lot on the day to day job having been in a range of different teams and parts of the business, whilst college teaches us some items i would say that the depth of a usual degree is lacking from their curriculum.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
As stated previously there is a large amount of change that can take place and this is only passed on to us shortly before that change is to be put into place. Whilst there is months for things to be organised it seems that this is only done a few weeks before something is due to occur sometime leading us scrambling to make arrangements for things.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
In terms of the day to day job the support from the employer is brilliant, if you have issues they can be dealt with quickly and arrangements can be put into place to ensure that you are not disadvantaged.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The support for SEN is brilliant and and the support towards assignments is great, the bit that lets the training provider down is when problems arise this can take a long time to be rectified sometimes taking multiple years.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
There is not the same depth to the degree that a typical university degree would have and when talking to graduates i can see a huge gap in the learning.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Different teams will have different social activities but there are always professional networking events taking place.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
No
Why?
Whilst i would not recommend the scheme to a friend, I would recommend the company as a whole. The reason for this is i think that due to the level of control you have over the apprenticeship and where this will take you career wise along with that fact that there is a learning gap between us and the graduates i personally think a degree would set the individual up for their career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be honest, be yourself and if you're passionate about what you're applying for let it be known.
