Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I am 6 months into my apprenticeship and still haven't been given a placement, but at the moment i go to work and do meaningless work that doesn't benefit the company and try to better myself by volunteering and putting my name forward for extra projects and STEM event but get told no.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
Haven't actually done any work for the company and when i ask about placements i get told that i shouldn't be worrying about that, but its been 6 months and its my education. I keep getting told no to anything that might benefit me and the company.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I've learnt a new CAD software and started to learn MATLABS but other than that its been training courses of systems that we wont use until 3 years time when we get told we will be put into technical placements. I don't feel I've actually used these skills to benefit the company as its just training course for 3 days then another one no time to actually out that in use (in a placement, as we aren't in one).

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
Nothing is planned with an adaquate amount of time, there doesnt seem to be good communication throughout early careers as nothing seems set in stone from the get go, there seems to be a lot of contradicting going on with what we should do and how to do it, We get told about programmes we can be a apart of and then have the offer to join but then get told no you can't do that, (So why tell us about it and why ask if we would like to join). There has been about 5 weeks worth of education that wasn't planned for and things have been moving around all the time so we sit in a room with no work to do.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
We get support when we ask for it but as we haven't been doing much there hasn't been a need for it other than when filling out diploma work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We get support when we ask for it but as we haven't been doing much there hasn't been a need for it other than when filling out diploma work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
It is all online and I don't like online learning very much there is meant to be once a semester that we attend our university but I feel that communication between the lectures and uni and then uni to Work needs to improve as we have missed practical's due to not being told about them until 2 weeks before and then work finds out 1 week before and there is nothing they can do to get us on site. I feel that there needs to be more onsite training at the uni and maybe finding a closer university where we can attend onsite easily would be ideal.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are yes but they aren't very good the sports part seems to be getting loads of traction but i feel there seems to be a barrier between the LAC and the rest of the cohorts as they know each other and so know who they are friends with. On the regard of Professional activities there are but they don't seem to be available for first years even when the person in charge of them is happy for first years and doesn't require any experience, my line manager still says no.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
No
Why?
I don't feel that the education and overall experience have consistently met the standards i expected given the size and reputation of the company. The programme has lacked structure and clarity, and certain aspects of the role differed from how they were originally presented.
While the company has strong branding and industry recognition, my personal experience has not always aligned with the expectations that they created.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
If you want to get quality education and a more friendly experience find a smaller company who can give you a more personal experience and a more tailored learning, If you want a name that stands out on your CV and it world renowned and the chance to work on military aircraft then i strongly suggest BAE Systems but be prepared to have to fight for change and the ability for the experiences that you want.
