Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role as an Engineer Apprentice is to help and learn off the current engineers in my place of work. I come into work 4 days a week and go to college once a week. I shadow the engineers while at work trying to absorb all the information I can. Start of the week is reactive work (breakdowns) and towards the end of the week is planned maintenance.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
As a 42 year old apprentice, i am absolutely loving the opportunity i have been given to work and learn in the engineering department. I am enjoying it that much i barely look at the time throughout the day anymore.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt an abundance of skills in my short time while i have been in engineering. A lot of my time has been spent in the packing department, so learning about robotics and Schuberts has been really good. We have also been on courses that have upped my skills. Bearing course, Fluid power course and Pneumatic course. All of these courses have given me new skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
We are on a very well organised 4 year FDEM course. We spend 4 days at our place of work and 1 day in college.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has been brilliant. We have an apprentice advisor on site and we also have the full support of engineering management and the people team and learning team. If we ever need anything all of these people are always available for us.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Our training provider has been very good. We go to Truro College who have a base in Bodmin. The only negative about the provider is the lack of practical work based at the college.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Its hard to comment on this as we are still very young in a journey as engineers.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Again this is another hard one to comment on. We generally don't do anything outside of work. Being a family man, i tend to spend my time with them when I'm not working. As far as im aware there is nothing in place to do team building or social exercises.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Samworth Brothers to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I started at the Samworth Brothers 15 years ago. The opportunities i have had to develop my self and up upskill has been immense. From my first day until now i am still getting the opportunities to develop myself.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Samworth Brothers?
Work hard and you will be rewarded for it. If you want to progress yourself you will have the opportunity to. You generally get out what you put in.
