Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role is central to group and forms part of the engineering Excellence team. My role is to align engineering strategy across the organisation, implement standardisation, through standards, policies, processes and identify any opportunities which support the overarching engineering strategy. Furthermore, I act as a central co-ordinator on behalf of the senior leaders and engineering managers from across the group with anything which is related to or has an impact on engineering.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
My role is varied and no two days are the same. From delivering new tools and standards to site across the group, through to supporting engineering apprenticeship programmes, leading significant change projects and driving the organisations sustainability agenda.
I thoroughly enjoy my role and I enjoy meeting new people from across the gorup.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt new skills and re-enforced existing skills.
My new role has required me to further develop my influencing and negotiation skills.
New skills I have learnt are looking ahead at legislation changes, how net zero impacts the organisation and how to develop strategies which help navigate the business through foreseen challenges and keep the organisation in line or ahead of the competition

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship programme with SHU is very well structured. There was clarity on the programmes road map from start to completion of the course.
Each module block was shared at the start of the course with dates and what would be covered. Closer to each block a timetable is released for further clarity on timings for lessons and peer review studies.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I am clear on who my line manager / mentor is. I have regularly scheduled 1-2-1's in place on a monthly basis. However, I frequently speak with my line manager / mentor and have the relevant supported need as requested.
I am also clear on who I can escalate any concerns to about my apprenticeship with both my employer and SHU.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
SHU have plenty of tools which allow any student to obtain the relevant support they need to achieve the desired outcome of their relevant study.
From online libraries, Hallum help and peer support through to feedback sessions at every block and 1-2-1's with my coach.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The programme I am currently on is providing me with further skills and knowledge which I hadn't had previously. This is allowing me to understand senior stakeholder requirements, how to address certain issues when they arise and how to inspire people through the power of story telling and clear communication. The list could go on. Overall I feel much more confident around my peers and more senior stakeholders within the organisation.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes. The site I am based at has a Gym for anyone to use during work or out of hours.
The organisation also holds fundraising events, volunteering work, Samworth charity challenge and much more. Sites are encouraged to be a part and get involved. I started a football team with one of the Samworth sites over 2 years ago which is still going strong to this day.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Samworth Brothers to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Samworth Brothers is one of the very few organisations which genuinely lives and breathes their core values.
Everyone is given a voice and if you want career progression or development, then you only have to ask. I have been very well supported since joining the organisation in 2019 starting my first role as engineering manager. I was presented from day one with a mentor to help me in my senior role.
Since then I have been promoted three times and taken on two apprenticeships in operational management and senior leadership.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Samworth Brothers?
You will feel very welcome at Samworth Brothers from day 1 of joining the organisation.
If you work hard, get involved, show alignment to their values and apply yourself the best you can. Then you will have a career at Samworth Brothers for life if you wanted.
Everyone makes mistakes along their career at some point, its part of learning and developing. Samworth Brothers is one of the few organisations that helps prevent you making further mistakes through mentorship, further training and coaching.
