Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day to day is always different. The internship lends itself so that you can craft the journey yourself. You have to liaise and work with your team function and carry out live tasks for them, fully supported. You may also get asked to complete a project that is completely guided and planned by you. Throughout the internship your day to day routine may also consist of networking and talking to other colleagues and interns to fully engage with the internship. You will also get opportunities for training and development for yourself.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
The responsibility given is suitable for one’s position in the team; it all depends on the size of your team and the function. This varies however as an intern you are invested in and the team will give you meaningful tasks and projects that contribute towards the wider business that can be used and implemented accordingly. You also decide on priorities and what work suits you best, even if it’s a small task putting your best hand at work is always good as it shows commitment and consistency.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt many new skills as well as developing new ones. Many of them consist of skills and knowledge that can be used and utilised in the work place. Whether this be email etiquette to how to present a presentation successfully. You also learn about the culture of the working word, transitioning from a student to an adult in a corporate environment. This is the main learning curve, is finding where you are most suited in a global and well known business.

The support and guidance was very good. Throughout my time here I have felt listened to and supported. The recruiting team as well as my function team have always been willing to teach me things, making sure I develop skills and knowledge that contribute towards my goals and objectives that I have set for my time. Any questions or queries can always be answered by your intern cohort as well. Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Company culture was good. Tesco aim to provide an inclusive and diverse environment. Ensuring that everyone from all backgrounds feel safe and listened to, this contributes towards the inclusive atmosphere within the company culture. The culture is also good in the sense that the Company Campus is full of an array of different people, diverse and unique: this encourages different opinions and insights that are useful when talking and working with people face to face.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I highly enjoyed my internship as it was a chance to experience a whole new environment to university. It also allowed me to see what I liked and what I didn’t, the opportunity to experience corporate life and the inner workings of a global retail business is an amazing one as it provides a prime example of what is out there. It provided a launch pad into what sparks my interests and what doesn’t: that is very important finding out what speaks to you.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Tesco plc to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Tesco plc
The advice I would give is that do not worry about the interview process. Everyone is provided a space to prove their talent and showcase their ideas. Applying to an internship here at Tesco might feel daunting as it is a very large company, however, the capacity of it means that you will gain an abundance of skills and experience that will provide you in good stead for the future. The application process is also quite demanding and long but it is a chance to challenge yourself.
