Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Market Risk Analyst, it was my job to determine the profit and loss of a trading desk for the day before and ensure the traders were staying within the companies risk tolerance. I also gave presentations to senior stakeholders regarding traders strategies and explained their performance using market news and price changes. Longer term I would use Python, SQL and Tableau to build models that were useful to the risk team.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given just as much responsibility as a full time market risk analyst.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Coming from a science background, I knew very little about trading and the energy markets coming into my placement. My knowledge on this area greatly improved over the course of my placement thanks to lots of guidance from colleagues.
My presentation and communication skills greatly improved over the year as there were plenty of opportunities to get out of my comfort zone and present.
I came into the placement with a good Python knowledge, but I gained the experience building a production ready code which greatly improved my coding skills.
Lots of quick analysis was done using excel, something that I had never really used before.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I had regular one to one's with my manager where I could openly ask any questions and raise any concerns. On top of this, my team were all very welcoming and nice such that I felt comfortable asking anyone in the team advice.
The early career team was also always available for chats if needed. They also provided regular seminars to help with our development, particularly focusing more on soft skills.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very friendly environment while still maintaining a professional atmosphere. Everyone in the company was willing to take time out of their day to help the placement students learn about their roles and share their knowledge.
Unlike most trading companies, I was never asked to work outside my normal working hours. There is of course still an expectation for high quality work, but there was always plenty of support within my team if ever I struggled.
There were also several team and company events providing a way to socialise with colleagues.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RWE Supply & Trading to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to RWE Supply & Trading
They don't expect you to come into the placement knowing everything about trading and the energy markets already, it is important to show that you are willing and keen to learn and that you have a genuine interest for this field. For the market risk analyst role, it is important to be analytical and also have strong communication skills.
