Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Mott MacDonald?
Very positive - I have enjoyed my time at the company so far
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Structural design calculations. Modelling of structures. Coordination of multiple disciplines.
I enjoy doing the calculations the most as I am more technically minded.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
Very good - I get the chance to contribute meaningfully to projects and deliver packages of work.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
3/5
It is ok - by industry standards I have heard of other firms offering graduate engineers higher starting salaries & faster salary progression.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
Excellent - I am constantly learning new skills and being put in scenarios that are outside of my comfort zone (in a good way). I feel that I am becoming more well rounded as an engineer through the opportunities presented to me.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I'm learning new things every day through my project work. Outside of this, there is a positive attitude to individual learning and training. We have training budget that we are allowed to allocate ourselves and spend on CPD sessions and training courses to develop our learning in a more tailored way.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
My managers and mentors / buddies have been very supportive. I feel very comfortable speaking to my line manager about issues I may be having in the workplace. We also have a great team mentality - I know that lots of people are available for a chat as a friend to go over any questions I may have.
How is your work-life balance?
3/5
I have gone through periods of working overtime when required for projects. Typically this is compensated - however (and I think this is true of most engineering firms) there is a slight expectation of overtime when necessary.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
Mott MacDonald has an excellent culture. It is very supportive of individual needs and considers people on a case-by-case basis. This fosters a great team culture where people can work the way they want to.
How would you rate Mott MacDonald initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
Excellent - there are multiple EDI initiatives in the company which allow representation and opportunities for learning about cultures that are outside of your own.
How would you rate Mott MacDonald CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
Excellent

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I've had a very positive experience working for the company. It is a great place to start your career as a young engineer and fosters a very positive environment for progression and continuous development.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
It is about what I expected - however since this is my first job perhaps I had expectations that would never be met, that in hindsight I can see were just my own misguided ideas of what a corporate job would be like.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
It's quite a long process (in my experience they all are) - don't be discouraged by the number of hoops you have to jump through. It all makes sense in the end! Also, don't expect all the questions you're asked to be about engineering. You will have to think outside of the box in your interview.
