Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Mott MacDonald?
I joined Mott MacDonald as a Graduate Civil Engineer, working within multidisciplinary teams on infrastructure projects. My role involved supporting design development, preparing technical documentation, and contributing to project delivery across highways and utilities.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Assisted in producing design drawings and calculations for civil engineering works.
Supported site investigations and coordinated with contractors and stakeholders.
Used industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D) for modelling and design.
Enjoyed collaborating with experienced engineers and learning from their expertise.
Found satisfaction in seeing designs progress from initial concepts
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I felt my input was valued, particularly when contributing to design reviews and problem-solving discussions. The team encouraged questions and provided constructive feedback, which helped me grow professionally.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
3/5
The salary was competitive for a graduate role, and there were good benefits such as flexible working, pension contributions, and access to professional development resources. The company also supports chartership pathways, which is a major perk. However, I often feel that I take on more responsibility than my pay reflects.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The experience gave me a strong foundation in civil engineering principles and practical application. Exposure to real projects and client interactions prepared me well for future responsibilities and progression towards chartership.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
I developed technical skills in design software, improved my understanding of engineering standards, and enhanced soft skills such as communication and teamwork. Training sessions and mentoring were readily available, which accelerated my learning.

How is your work-life balance?
4/5
My work-life balance has been good overall. The typical working week is structured and manageable, with flexibility to adjust hours when needed. Hybrid working options allow for a healthy mix of office and remote work, which supports personal time and reduces commuting stress. However, when deadlines come round, additional hours are required.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5

There is a strong emphasis on equality, diversity, and sustainability, which aligns with the company’s core 'PRIDE' values. Teams work well together, and knowledge sharing is encouraged, creating a positive and supportive atmosphere.
Hybrid working is well established, offering flexibility between office and remote work. This approach helps maintain a healthy work-life balance and demonstrates trust in employees. Employees are currently asked to be in the office more than 50% of the time, but this can include site and client offices.

Being neurodiverse, there is plenty of support available when you ask for it.
