Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a teaching assistant, my role is to support the teacher and students to ensure effective learning takes place. On a daily basis, I help prepare classroom materials, assist with lessons, and work with individuals or small groups to reinforce learning. I also support students who need extra help, promote positive behavior, and contribute to creating an inclusive and engaging classroom environment. Additionally, I help with administrative tasks and share observations with the teacher to support student progress and development.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility during my placement. I supported the teacher in planning and delivering lessons, worked independently with small groups of students, and provided one-to-one support where needed. I was also trusted to prepare learning materials, help manage classroom behavior, and assist in assessing students’ progress. These responsibilities helped me build confidence, develop my communication skills, and gain valuable hands-on experience in supporting teaching and learning.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, during my placement I developed a range of skills and built on those I already had. I improved my communication and teamwork skills through daily interaction with students and staff, and I became more confident in managing classroom behavior and supporting different learning needs. I also developed my organizational skills by helping prepare lessons and resources, and I gained a better understanding of how to adapt activities for individual students. Overall, the experience strengthened my ability to work effectively in an educational setting and support both teaching and learning.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my placement. My supervising teacher and other staff were always approachable and willing to offer advice or feedback, which helped me build confidence in my role. I was given clear instructions at the start but also encouraged to take initiative as I became more comfortable. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions allowed me to reflect on my progress and improve my practice. Overall, the support I received was very helpful in developing my skills and understanding of the teaching assistant role.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company (or school) culture and general atmosphere were very positive and supportive. Staff worked collaboratively and were always willing to help each other, creating a strong sense of teamwork. The environment was welcoming and inclusive, which made it easy to settle in and feel valued as part of the team. There was a clear focus on the well-being and development of both students and staff, and communication was open and respectful. Overall, it was a friendly and professional atmosphere that encouraged learning, growth, and mutual support.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my placement and found it to be a rewarding and valuable experience. It gave me the opportunity to apply what I’d learned in a real setting, build strong relationships with students and staff, and see the positive impact of my support on pupils’ learning and confidence. I particularly enjoyed working closely with students and helping them overcome challenges. The supportive environment and variety of tasks also made each day interesting and fulfilling. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience that strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in education.

My advice to anyone applying to De Montfort University would be to make the most of the opportunities available and get involved in university life from the start. DMU offers excellent academic support, practical learning experiences, and a welcoming, diverse community — so don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance when needed. Take advantage of placements, workshops, and extracurricular activities, as they really help you build skills and confidence. Finally, stay organized, manage your time well, and be open to new experiences — DMU provides a great environment for both personal and professional growth.
