Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a ‘Marketing and Social Media Intern’, I created engaging social media content, including staff FAQ videos, and authored blog posts to enhance the organisation’s online presence. I designed newsletters for both therapists and the public, as well as posters and leaflets to raise awareness of the services offered within the local community. By attending local networking events, I actively promoted services, shared information directly with community members and built professional connections. Additionally, I managed and updated contact databases to support the targeted outreach and delivered tailored communication that strengthened connections with key stakeholders.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a sufficient amount of responsibility during my internship. The staff were extremely friendly and treated me as an equal, whilst considering that I was a student and ensured I understood my assigned tasks. Everyone was very friendly and were all keen to help me if I had any questions.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I learnt a lot of new skills, including using digital marketing using social media. I also analysed content statistics and tried to discover trends in terms of the most liked content. I developed my communication skills and ability to work in a team, as well as independently.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a lot of support and guidance during my internship. My manager was great and flexible, ensuring that my needs were met. They went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and happy with the work I was doing. I couldn't have asked for a better experience!

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was very family-like, and they were all so welcoming. The atmosphere was relaxing and inclusive, ensuring everyone who came in (including clients) felt a part of the team. It was great.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my internship! Not only did I learn many new skills, I also gained experience within a field directly related to my career. I have found myself constantly referring back to it during interviews and it has really helped to shape me as a person. I am still in touch with staff members!

I would strongly recommend applying to DMU. I think it is a great university for work experience - one of the main reasons I chose this university. The opportunities are endless, I have worked 5 roles within or through the university and I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one!
