Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Projects and Marketing Intern with the De Montfort University Careers Team, my role involved supporting the planning, promotion, and delivery of student engagement initiatives. On a day-to-day basis, I created marketing content for social media and newsletters, promoted events, and helped manage student communications to raise awareness of career opportunities and university services. I also supported the coordination of events such as employer panels, drop-in sessions, and workshops, ensuring they ran smoothly and provided a positive experience for attendees. Alongside this, I carried out administrative and data management tasks, contributed creative ideas to campaigns, and worked closely with the team to enhance student engagement across campus.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a great level of responsibility throughout my 6-month internship. In the beginning, my manager was an amazing and supportive mentor who guided me closely while I settled into the role and learned the team’s processes. After my first couple of weeks, as I became more confident and familiar with the work, she encouraged me to take more independence and ownership of my tasks. I independently wrote and designed digital newsletters sent to hundreds of students, managed social media content to promote key events, and represented the team at in-person activities, providing information and support to students. I was also trusted to design marketing materials in line with DMU’s branding and analyse engagement data using Excel. This level of trust and guidance helped me grow in confidence, take initiative, and manage multiple priorities effectively while maintaining high standards of professionalism and communication.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
During my internship, I developed a range of professional and personal skills that strengthened my confidence and ability to work effectively with others. My communication skills improved greatly through writing newsletters, creating social media content, and engaging with students at events, which helped me adapt my approach for different audiences. I also became more confident speaking with people face-to-face, whether that was students or colleagues. Working as part of the Careers and Placements Team helped me develop strong teamwork and collaboration skills, as I learned to balance my own responsibilities while supporting group projects and campaigns. I also became more organised, managing my time well to meet deadlines and handle multiple creative tasks at once. Overall, the internship helped me grow both professionally and personally, giving me the confidence to communicate effectively and work independently in future roles.

I received a great deal of support and guidance throughout my internship, which made a huge difference to my learning experience. My manager was incredibly supportive from the very beginning. She took the time to guide me through each task, offer feedback, and encourage me to develop my own ideas with confidence. I also received consistent help from other colleagues in the team, including a placement student I worked closely with to create social media videos and other digital content. This supportive environment helped me settle in quickly, build new skills, and feel confident taking on more responsibility as the internship progressed.
