Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Frazer-Nash Consultancy?
My experience at Frazer-Nash has been excellent. As soon as I joined I was made to feel welcome and involved within the team. Everyone I have interacted with in the company has been incredibly helpful and supportive. I've been provided ample guidance and resources to up-skill in the areas I am most interested in, and given opportunities to choose the sort of work that I want to do. Leaders in my team have empowered me to take on important responsibilities within projects to help me further develop my knowledge, skills and experience. This is a job and a company that I can see myself staying with for a very long time.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Since joining the company, I have mainly worked within two teams: Software Development and Systems Engineering. As part of the Software Development team, I have assisted with pushing updates to code repositories, handling pull requests and pipeline builds, de-bugging errors, managing version control, and setting up new software on company laptops. I have most enjoyed getting to grips with how the low level systems work and finding ways to improve our code structure. As part of the Systems Engineering team, I have learned much about Model-Based Systems Engineering techniques, which I have applied on projects to create models of system architectures, including software functions, network communications, and hardware assemblies. I have been responsible for handling information flow into, and generating exports from, system models that encompass a wide variety of technical domains. In this role, I have most enjoyed the high-level systems-oriented perspective which shows how all of the parts of a system fit together to function as a whole, which complements the low-level perspective of software development.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
The value that each individual brings to the team is consistently recognised. Even small wins are often celebrated and shared with others in the team. People with specific domain knowledge or niche skill sets are generally well known and advertised when needed. For example, after applying my skills in MBSE on a project, I have since been approached by many other people in the company (who I had not previously met) seeking advice on systems modelling. Leaders within our team often take opportunities to encourage and highlight examples of good work.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
My salary has been increased on several occasions to reflect the competencies and contributions I bring to the team. The company benefits package includes health and dental cover that I can also pay to add my partner to. There are also many sustainable benefits such as the Green Commute Initiative for cycling to work, and old technology recycling services. I particularly appreciate the contributions to my pension that the company matches up to a generous amount.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
I am constantly exposed to many interesting projects within growing technology sectors, which continuously enhances my domain-specific knowledge. Being able to position myself between Software Development and Systems Engineering, I feel confident that my skill-set will prepare me well to keep pace with emerging technologies throughout my career. I have also been provided with a professional mentor who offers regular guidance and assistance with preparations towards becoming chartered.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I have been encouraged to seek out training courses (both internal and external) to further develop my skills. Shortly after joining I was recommended a Udemy course (enrollment paid by the company) for a software package used in our team. I have recently enrolled onto an internal project management training course that I sought out through my line manager. Most notably, despite not having any prior experience in MBSE before joining, I have been trusted to upskill via internal courses, self study, and on-the-job learning - to the point where I am now responsible for most of the MBSE work within our team.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
I regularly discuss my short and long term career trajectory with an informal mentor within the company as well as my line manager. There is also a comprehensive Early Careers initiative that spans for 2 years after joining and organises learning sessions, interactive workshops, networking events, financial well-being talks, knowledge sharing seminars and more.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
I am trusted by my line manager to fulfill my time commitments to my job whilst also given the flexibility to work around my personal life when needed. We are encouraged to take time off in lieu after particularly busy periods where longer hours or lots of travelling may have been needed, and also to take regular breaks away from our desks.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
There is a strong emphasis on valuing people and their well-being within the organization. Safety in and around the workplace is taken very seriously and a Zero Harm policy is a big part of our culture. In general, most of the company operates on a hybrid working policy which give people the flexibility to choose how often they visit the office. The atmosphere in the offices is always very friendly with a range of spaces to provide quieter spaces to work and more social areas to connect with colleagues. Even when working remotely, people are engaged and passionate about the work they are doing.
How would you rate Frazer-Nash Consultancy initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
There is a huge range of societies and communities on offer within the company. These range from more local office-based groups that organise scavenger hunts, gaming sessions, fitness activities, etc. to wider reaching groups that raise money for charities through bake sale days or quiz nights. People from all backgrounds are supported to succeed and feel a sense of belonging.
How would you rate Frazer-Nash Consultancy CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
Frazer-Nash Consultancy has a strong commitment to ensuring the work we do is environmentally sustainable and brings value to the communities we work with. People from many areas of the company are encouraged to get involved with some of the many STEM outreach initiatives that the company organises or contributes to. The company is also financially supportive of the time employees spend towards volunteering work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Frazer-Nash Consultancy to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have found Frazer-Nash Consultancy to be a fantastic company to work in, where everyone is treated with trust and respect. They provide a wealth of support to help you grow personally and professionally, and people are genuinely invested in seeing you reach your full potential.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
The recruitment process was very well organised and the job has certainly matched the great impression I got from the outset. Although the technical work I now do was not what I originally expected, this is because I have been empowered to explore new technical fields that I had not previously been exposed to. As a result, I have enjoyed becoming more specialised in a new and interesting domain of work that suits me well.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Frazer-Nash Consultancy?
At the recruitment stage, being able to demonstrate a good balance between planning and action will make you stand out. Also, being able to adapt your solutions to accommodate changing situations is very important for working in a consultancy. During the onboarding process, try to take every opportunity to find out what sort of work is being done around you. This will help you get to know the company and it's people, and may also let you discover an alternative career path that you hadn't considered.
