Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at NatWest Group?
Joining NatWest as a graduate software engineer has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The programme offered a supportive environment to grow both technically and professionally, with structured learning, opportunities to participate in a variety of challenges and activities, and real-world project exposure. I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside talented and welcoming colleagues who are genuinely invested in helping graduates succeed. The culture encourages collaboration, continuous improvement, and innovation, making it a great place to start a career in tech.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
During my time on the programme, I contributed to full-stack development projects, participated in SCRUM ceremonies, and worked on improving internal tools and processes.
I've enjoyed working on full-stack development the most.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
My role has consistently given me the opportunity to contribute in ways that feel both meaningful and appreciated. During my first placement I was given the opportunity to lead the rollout of a new tooling system to the team.
The team culture is incredibly supportive. Feedback is constructive, recognition is genuine, and my input is actively sought during planning and retrospectives.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
Lots of benefits available relating to healthcare, pension, holiday buy and cashback schemes at a variety of retailers. Spouses and children can also be included on most of the healthcare benefits. I find the holiday buy most beneficial as it is very cheap.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The graduate role has been an excellent foundation for my future career in software engineering. It’s given me hands-on experience with modern development practices, exposure to both frontend and backend technologies, and opportunities to lead initiatives and collaborate across teams. The structured nature of the programme and ability to work in and experience different teams has helped me build confidence, technical depth, and a clearer sense of the kind of work I enjoy.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I’d rate the skill development aspect very highly. Formal training sessions and workshops provided a solid grounding in core technologies, agile methodologies, and soft skills. My day-to-day role offered continuous learning through real-world challenges. I’ve developed new skills in infrastructure-as-code, UI design, and stakeholder communication, while also deepening my understanding of software architecture and team workflows. The balance between structured learning and practical experience has been key to my growth.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
5/5
The support I’ve received throughout the graduate programme has been outstanding. My line manager has provided consistent guidance and opportunities to grow within the team, while my graduate manager has helped me navigate the wider programme and plan for my long-term development. I was also assigned a buddy from the previous year's graduate cohort. Whether it was answering day-to-day questions or offering informal advice, they’ve been a great source of support. Together, this network has made me feel well-supported, encouraged, and confident in my role.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
My work-life balance has been well-supported throughout the graduate programme. Sprint planning is thoughtfully managed to ensure that work is achievable within the two-week cycle, and the team is careful not to bring in too much at once. This helps maintain a steady pace and avoids unnecessary pressure. My line manager also checks in regularly to make sure I’m comfortable with my workload and has been proactive in adjusting priorities when needed. This level of support and flexibility has made it easier to stay productive while maintaining a healthy balance outside of work.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
The culture at NatWest is inclusive, collaborative, and values-driven. There’s a strong emphasis on integrity, curiosity, and doing the right thing, which comes through in both the work and the wider environment. I’ve found the software engineering community to be particularly diverse (both among the other graduates during induction and within my team) which has made the experience richer and more welcoming. The organisation also supports a range of employee-led networks celebrating different cultures, backgrounds, and interests, and there are always events and initiatives happening that promote connection and inclusion. It’s an atmosphere where people are encouraged to be themselves, contribute ideas, and grow.
How would you rate NatWest Group initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
I would rate NatWest Group’s initiatives in equality, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility very highly. The organisation actively promotes an inclusive culture through employee-led networks, regular events, and open conversations around identity and belonging. There’s also a clear effort to make resources and opportunities accessible to everyone, with support available for different needs and backgrounds. These initiatives feel genuine and embedded in the company’s values, not just surface-level.
How would you rate NatWest Group CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
Working on a sustainability-focused team has given me direct insight into the organisation’s commitment to responsible business practices. There are events and collaborations with third parties like Microsoft, Red Hat, and Dell, which highlight the bank’s proactive approach to environmental and social impact. The volunteering opportunities are also impressive. There are plenty of well-organised days available for employees to give back to their communities. Overall, CSR feels like a genuine priority at NatWest, embedded in both strategy and culture.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The team vibe is very relaxed and welcoming, and everyone genuinely wants you to succeed. From day one, I’ve felt supported by my manager, buddy, and colleagues, and there’s a real sense of community across the graduate programme. The atmosphere is positive, inclusive, and encouraging, which makes it a great place to learn, grow, and enjoy your work. It’s been a brilliant start to my career in tech.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
During interviews and onboarding, there was a clear emphasis on learning, collaboration, and meaningful project work, which has absolutely been reflected in my experience. I’ve had the chance to work on impactful initiatives and grow my skills in a supportive environment. The diversity within the team and the strong culture of inclusion were also highlighted early on, and I’ve found those values to be genuinely embedded in day-to-day life at NatWest.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to NatWest Group?
While I think the interview process might have changed since I applied, one piece of advice I’d still recommend is preparing strong STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) answers. This format helped me structure my responses clearly and show how I approached challenges and delivered outcomes. It’s also worth researching NatWest Group’s values and current initiatives, especially around technology and sustainability, as these often come up in conversations.
