Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an Internal Audit Consultant at RSM, my role would involve supporting clients in evaluating and strengthening their internal controls, risk management, and governance processes. On a day-to-day basis, I would assist in planning and conducting audits by understanding business operations, identifying key risks, and testing controls to ensure they are operating effectively. This would include analysing data, reviewing documentation, and discussing findings with client staff to gather insights. I would also help prepare reports that highlight any weaknesses or areas for improvement, providing practical recommendations that add value to the client’s organisation. The role combines analytical work with client interaction, allowing me to develop both technical and professional skills while contributing to the delivery of high-quality audit services.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility during my placement. From early on, I was trusted to take ownership of specific audit tasks such as testing controls, preparing working papers, and contributing to client reports. I also had the opportunity to communicate directly with clients to gather information and clarify queries, which helped me build my confidence and professional skills. One of the highlights of my placement was getting the chance to speak with the CEO and senior management of a client organisation, which gave me valuable insight into how audit findings influence strategic decision-making. Overall, the experience was very hands-on and helped me develop a strong understanding of the practical side of internal auditing.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, during my placement I developed a range of both technical and professional skills. I enhanced my analytical and problem-solving abilities by performing control testing and identifying potential process improvements. I also improved my communication skills through regular interaction with clients and colleagues, learning how to present findings clearly and professionally. In addition, I strengthened my attention to detail and time management, as I often worked on multiple audit assignments with tight deadlines. I also gained a deeper understanding of risk management frameworks and internal audit methodologies, which helped me apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. Overall, the placement helped me grow into a more confident, organised, and proactive professional.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received some support and guidance during my placement, though much of the work encouraged me to take initiative and learn independently. My team was approachable and willing to help when I had questions, but I was often expected to manage my own tasks and figure things out through research and problem-solving. This level of autonomy helped me become more resourceful and confident in my work, even though structured guidance was limited at times.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was generally professional and supportive, but at first, it was a bit challenging to fit in as there seemed to be a few established cliques within the team. It took some time to feel fully comfortable and find my place, but as the placement went on and I got to know people better, the atmosphere became much more positive and collaborative. By the end, I felt more included and found that most colleagues were friendly and willing to help once I’d built those relationships.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed my placement to some extent, but not as much as I had hoped. While it was a valuable learning experience and I appreciated the opportunity to develop new skills and gain insight into internal audit, some aspects of the work were quite repetitive, and it took a while to feel fully integrated into the team. That said, I did enjoy the sense of responsibility I was given and the chance to see how audit work contributes to real business decisions.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to RSM
My advice to others applying to RSM would be to make sure they thoroughly research the role and the firm before applying. It’s important to understand what internal audit involves day-to-day and how it fits within RSM’s wider service lines, as this will help you show genuine interest and prepare stronger answers during interviews. I’d also recommend being ready to demonstrate attention to detail, teamwork, and adaptability, as these skills are key to succeeding in the role. Finally, go in with an open mind and a willingness to learn — the placement can be challenging at times, but it’s a great opportunity to build a solid foundation for a career in audit or consulting.
