Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
During my internship I worked within the Defined Benefit Investment team, supporting consultants with research, analysis, and client-related deliverables. On a day-to-day basis, this involved tasks such as reviewing investment strategies, preparing slides and materials for client meetings, and contributing to ongoing projects around responsible investment, biodiversity, and climate considerations. I also assisted with data analysis and investment calculations, which helped me develop a stronger understanding of portfolio construction and risk management. Alongside project work, I spent time learning about the firm’s approach to stewardship and client engagement, and collaborated with colleagues across different teams to gain a broad view of Hymans Robertson’s services.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my internship. From the outset I was trusted to contribute to live projects, such as researching biodiversity and climate considerations for the WPP client work, and preparing materials that were used in team discussions and presentations. I was also given ownership of smaller tasks, like reviewing investment data and drafting slides, which allowed me to add real value while developing my skills. The balance between guidance and independence meant I felt supported, but also challenged to take initiative and build confidence in my work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I’ve both developed existing skills and learnt new ones during my internship. On the technical side, I enhanced my analytical skills by working with investment data, carrying out calculations, and understanding how different asset classes are assessed within DB schemes. I also built my research skills through exploring how climate and biodiversity considerations influence investment strategy and stewardship practices. On the softer side, I improved my communication and presentation skills by contributing to client materials and explaining findings to colleagues, as well as developing time management and attention to detail by balancing multiple tasks. Overall, the internship has given me a strong foundation to build on in both technical and professional skills.
