Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Sellafield Ltd?
My experience at Sellafield Ltd has been incredibly rewarding and diverse, offering valuable opportunities for technical development, leadership, and collaboration. Through placements in multiple engineering teams. I've gained hands-on experience in asset management, reliability engineering, and inclusive leadership. The graduate scheme has equipped me with a strong foundation in nuclear awareness, supported by facility tours, structured learning, and meaningful contributions to site-wide projects, preparing me well for a future in the nuclear industry.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
As a Graduate Reliability Engineer at Sellafield Ltd, my main responsibilities include supporting asset management through data analysis, reviewing maintenance instructions, conducting plant walkdowns, collaborating with system engineers, and contributing to reliability and condition assessments across various facilities. I particularly enjoy the hands-on technical work, problem-solving, and the opportunity to work across diverse teams. I also work in alignment with Nuclear Licence Condition 28 (Examination, Inspection, Maintenance and Testing – EIMT), ensuring that reliability activities meet regulatory standards and support safe, effective plant operation.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
My role at Sellafield Ltd gives me meaningful opportunities to contribute and feel valued by my team. I’m involved in tasks which have a direct impact on improving reliability and operational planning. I’m trusted to take initiative and work independently, while also collaborating closely with plant engineers to deliver high-quality outcomes, which makes the work both fulfilling and appreciated.

The salary is competitive for a graduate role, and the benefits such as a strong pension scheme, generous annual leave and flexible working The support for professional development and support towards chartership, including mentorship training and qualifications, adds further value and reflects a fair return for the work and responsibilities involved.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

Working in reliability engineering and following relevant licence conditions has strengthened my technical abilities, while structured learning has enhanced my nuclear awareness and understanding of engineering principles in a real-world context.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
The support I’ve received throughout the graduate scheme has been strong overall. My line manager has provided clear guidance and regular feedback, helping me stay aligned with development goals. Mentor has been particularly helpful in offering technical advice and supporting my progress toward chartership. While the support has generally been effective, more structured career planning discussions could enhance long-term development and clarity around post-scheme progression.
How is your work-life balance?
3/5
My work-life balance is generally good, supported by flexible working hours and a manageable workload. Living in a rural area near Sellafield means there’s not as much to do compared to a city, but I make the most of it by socialising with colleagues, joining sports clubs, and staying active through regular exercise. These activities help maintain my physical and mental wellbeing and create a healthy balance between work and personal life.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
4/5
The environment is friendly, inclusive, and welcoming, with approachable colleagues and a strong emphasis on teamwork. Hybrid working is supported where appropriate, and there’s a clear effort to promote a positive work-life balance. However, one challenge is the pace, processes can be slow, and getting tasks approved or reviewed often requires persistent follow-up. While the culture is supportive, streamlining these processes would improve efficiency and overall experience.
How would you rate Sellafield Ltd initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
The company actively promotes an inclusive culture through networks like REACH, awareness events, and open discussions around diversity. These initiatives help create a welcoming environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel supported and heard. There’s a clear commitment to improving accessibility and fostering a workplace that values respect, representation, and continuous improvement in EDI.
How would you rate Sellafield Ltd CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
4/5
The company shows a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, ethical standards, and community engagement through volunteering and local outreach. These efforts reflect a genuine intention to make a positive impact beyond the workplace.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Sellafield Ltd to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would recommend Sellafield Ltd to a friend. The company offers a supportive environment, strong development opportunities, and meaningful work within the nuclear industry, making it a great place to start and grow a career.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
3/5
While the graduate scheme provided valuable experience, I didn’t fully utilise my electrical engineering degree in some placements. With four predetermined rotations, I would have preferred more choice to align with my interests and background.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Sellafield Ltd?
If you're applying to Sellafield Ltd, my advice would be to research the business areas and express clear preferences during the recruitment process. The onboarding is smooth and well-supported, but placements are predetermined, so you may not get to fully apply your degree in every rotation. Being proactive and asking questions early can help you make the most of the opportunities available.
