Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a meaningful level of responsibility during my internship, which made the experience both engaging and rewarding. From early on, I was trusted to work independently on tasks that contributed to broader team objectives. For example, I was involved in documenting governance processes or supporting the Visa Direct expansion, which required attention to detail, research, and coordination across different teams.
While I always had support available when needed, I appreciated that I wasn’t micromanaged. This autonomy helped me build confidence in my decision-making and problem-solving skills. I was also encouraged to take ownership of my work, present updates, and suggest improvements, which made me feel like a valued member of the team rather than just an observer.
Overall, the level of responsibility I was given struck a good balance—it challenged me to grow professionally while ensuring I had the guidance to succeed.

In addition to informal support, there were structured opportunities for development, such as training sessions, access to resources, and involvement in team meetings. These helped me build both my technical knowledge and my understanding of the broader business context.

Understand the company’s mission and values. Visa is deeply involved in innovation, financial inclusion, and secure money movement. Tailor your application to show how your interests and skills align with these goals.

Network and engage. Visa has a collaborative culture. Take the time to connect with colleagues across teams, attend internal events, and learn from others’ experiences. It can open doors and deepen your understanding of the business.
Stay organised and reflective. Keep track of your progress, challenges, and achievements. This will help you make the most of your internship and articulate your growth when it comes time for evaluations or future applications.
