Finance Intern Review

During my internship, I had the opportunity to work closely with both the Actuarial Support and Operations teams. My day-to-day responsibilities involved supporting them with key tasks such as daily reports, reserve calculations, and contributing to quarterly accounting statements and various analyses. This hands-on experience allowed me to deepen my understanding of actuarial processes and financial reporting.
In addition to my core responsibilities, I actively engaged in networking across different teams, which helped me gain broader insights into the business and build valuable professional relationships. I also collaborated with fellow interns on a group project focused on the application of artificial intelligence within the industry. This project not only enhanced my technical and teamwork skills but also gave me exposure to innovative approaches being explored in the field.

Yes, I was given a lot of responsibility. I took ownership of the daily reports and issued them out to the clients by the end of each day. I took charge of various tasks such as quarterly statements and different calculations. I was responsible for my own learning and development, ensuring I allocated time to different courses that would help me grow. I reached out to various people across the business to grow my network and get exposure to all the different business areas here at M&G.

Learned a lot of technical skills within excel such as updating codes, Power Query, running models, and the functions of complex commands. Learned to be more organised and manage my time more effectively. Picked up presentation and communication skills.

I received a lot of support and management during my time here. My manager was very hands-on in my journey, showing me tasks at high-level and answering any of my questions. We also had arranged 2 1:!s a week, keeping me in line of achieving my objectives whilst allowing me to communicate about each task and any concerns I had. All interns also had buddies, I had a 1:1 with mine each week which was really helpful to speak to someone who was once in the same boat as you. Also, the graduates and people within my team and actuary as a whole only encouraged me to do well and would help in any way to support that.

The company fostered a collaborative and inclusive culture, which made it easy to integrate and contribute meaningfully from day one. I found the environment to be supportive and engaging, with team members always willing to share knowledge and offer guidance. Working with the Actuarial Support and Operations teams, I experienced a strong sense of teamwork and professionalism, which helped me build confidence in my work and develop new skills.
There was also a clear emphasis on learning and development, both through formal tasks and informal networking opportunities. The atmosphere encouraged curiosity and innovation, especially during our group project on AI, where we were given the freedom to explore ideas and present our findings. Overall, the culture was welcoming and growth-oriented, making it a very positive and enriching experience.

I fully enjoyed my experience here from meeting lots of new people and growing my professional network, to developing both my professional and soft skills.
