Intern Review

I interned in the Internal Audit department which involved a mix of bringing myself up to date with the audits I was being introduced to, preparing documents such as Audit Planning Documents and testing Controls and Risks. ON a day-to-day basis I would usually start at 8.30, have a daily meeting, do various tasks assigned to me and network across the bank.

I was given independence over the tasks assigned to me, however, I was given little responsibility as much of what I was doing was just an early draft or shadowing. This was slightly frustrating but understandable as the rotations were only three weeks and therefore I couldn't delve into enough depth within the audit to contribute fully.

I have learnt many new skills including improving my Excel skills, documentation, using active voice, and how to approach stakeholders. The training provided in the first week gave a really good insight into finance as someone who has done very little before, if anything there could have been more but inevitably the internship only lasted 10 weeks so this was not possible.

I received a lot of support throughout my internship. Before joining I was allocated a buddy and my line manager. My buddy was really helpful for the more menial questions, however everyone in the office was so friendly I felt as though I could have asked anyone around me. My line manager was also really helpful in providing advise and feedback on both work and interactions within the office. The Early Careers team also offer support through training and fortnightly drop-in sessions where you can ask any questions.

The company culture was extremely welcoming and friendly. Everyone made time to meet me for a coffee to discuss what it is like working in their role and working for MUFG which was extremely valuable in assessing the direction in which I want to take my career and key ways to approach the internship and certain tasks on it. I also felt as though the company made clear all the opportunities available, whether it was rotating through your department or meeting people across the bank, which was incredibly interesting. You are also encouraged to participate in bank-wide social activities and CSR days which was important as you get a glimpse of what the day-to-day is actually like as an employee and meet people you wouldn't have the opportunity to otherwise.

I enjoyed it a lot and felt very supported throughout by all my colleagues and fellow internships. I would advise anyone who gets the offer to take it. The 10-weeks flew past and I feel as though I have grown immensely in that time.
