Summer Intern Review

So far the role has consisted of shadowing senior colleagues and sitting in on client meetings, as well as attending catch up meetings with various colleagues to learn about their day to day.
A lot of the work consists of performing individual transfer value calculations for members in pension schemes, as well as drafting actuarial reports and deliverables for the client.
We often utilise WTW's in-house software to carry out calculations and perform reasonableness checks afterwards.
Some other responsibilities include organising social events with other interns and colleagues for the rest of the team, and we are also working on an individual client project towards the end of the internship.

Throughout the programme I was encouraged to reach out to people and ask for different pieces of work to be passed down to me, as well as to shadow colleagues and watch them carry out tasks.
I have learnt to be more independent and explore what type of work interests me the most which has been great.
We have also been tasked with organising social events and presenting our own individual client projects.
Throughout the internship, I have been able to get involved in real client work and calculations which impact real people, which has been a valuable experience.

It is a great chance to build on both soft and technical skills!
In particular I have honed my Excel skills which have been crucial in performing calculations and checks, and also looking at large data sets. I have also had the chance to use a variety of WTW's in-house software which has been exciting and a great way to improve my problem-solving skills.
Other skills involve communication and teamwork, since a lot of the work consists of working with new people and everybody collaborating together.
There is often lots of exciting work to be doing and new deadlines arising all the time, which makes time management very important, and it has been key for me to stay organised. Learning to be flexible and adaptable has also been a key new skill for me, since the work can be quite fast-paced.

There has always been lots of support available throughout the whole programme. Each intern is assigned at least one buddy to talk to and collaborate with on work, and the intern managers have always been available to talk to if we have problems.
The training here has been super engaging, with the leads always being super approachable whenever we had questions. There were lots of sessions and extra workbooks and resources for self study which has been interesting.
In general the whole office is super friendly and approachable, and everybody has been keen to get to know the interns and help us to settle in.

Company culture and general atmosphere has been great. People are keen to introduce themselves and get to know the interns, and there are often different networking and social events going on each week which are inclusive of everyone.
Business units and teams often go out for lunch together and organise their own socials too which is really nice.

I enjoyed my internship because everyone has been super friendly and approachable which eased the nerves! The work has been enjoyable and challenging, with lots of people around you who are happy to help and want you to succeed.
I managed to develop both my soft and technical skills and build valuable connections with people in the office. We also had an opportunity to meet the other interns in different offices through in-person training days, so overall there have been lots of opportunities for networking.
