Finance Intern Review

As a Finance intern in the Accounting team I contribute to a range of core financial operations. My responsibilities include supporting month-end and quarter-end closing activities by preparing trial balances, creating analysis reports, assisting with preparation of audit material, and performing control processes. I also review the accuracy of financial statements and create various reports to support regular and ad-hoc analysis requests. In my role I work regularly with software such as SAP, Excel, and Power BI to carry out my tasks. Overall, the role provides a great opportunity to learn about financial accounting, offering a comprehensive understanding of accounting processes within a corporate environment.

I was given a good level of responsibility during my placement, which really helped my professional growth. I was given a lot of responsibility particularly when it came to various analysis tasks. I was trusted to independently gather and analyse financial data to support reporting and decision-making processes. One of my key responsibilities involved creating dashboards which were presented regularly to support in a major project. Additionally, I was responsible for supporting key activities such as preparing materials for external auditors and conducting reviews of financial statements.

During my internship I learnt valuable digital and automation skills. I learnt how to use Power BI to create insightful dashboards and visual reports and also improved my proficiency in Excel. These skills enhanced my data analysis skills, enabling me to work more efficiently with financial data. Beyond the technical skills I've gained, I also strengthened my teamwork and communication skills through collaboration with various colleagues across departments.

I received a good level of support and guidance throughout my internship. My team was always approachable and willing to answer any questions I had. I also really valued and enjoyed my regular catch ups with my line manager. While a lot of work was independent, I always felt there was someone I could turn to if I needed help. Overall it was a great learning environment and it really helped me build my technical and interpersonal skills and confidence in a professional setting.

The company culture is very welcoming and supportive. I felt included and involved from the start and was encouraged to ask questions, which created a great environment for learning and development. The atmosphere is professional yet friendly, and there is a strong sense of collaboration across the team. People are approachable and always willing to offer help or share knowledge, which makes it easier to settle in and learn.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, it was an invaluable experience that I really cherish. It gave me the opportunity to experience a professional work environment and develop both my technical and soft skills. I particularly enjoyed working on data analysis using tools like Excel and Power BI, which greatly enhanced my proficiency and confidence in using them. While I would have loved the opportunity to gain exposure to other areas of the broader finance function, the experience overall confirmed my strong interest in pursuing a career in finance and provided a solid foundation to build on in the future.
