Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Working in a team of engineers to deliver Software Projects. Bi weekly sprint meetings to discuss project development status/deadlines. Working externally with other Software teams within the department to share resources and use as project testers. Daily tasks vary, involves software development planning with other engineers, writing test scripts, testing project changes or project planning meetings.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was treated as a full time Software Engineer, not as a placement student meaning I was given the same responsibility to deliver my work on time, to an acceptable level as any other engineer would. This was paramount to the boost in skills I gained on my placement year. If I was unfamiliar with a task, or was struggling, there was lots of support around me to help me complete my goals.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
The placement provided major development in my skills such as critical thinking, time management, knowledge in languages such as Python and Javascript. Gaining experience working within the industry on real-life projects provided me with new skills such as high level project planning, good communication, and hands on experience working within a team. Support from the other engineers developed my confidence within my Software Engineering abilities also.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received fantastic support from the other engineers in my team, helping me when I was stuck of a task, providing me with resources to learn from around the technologies we were using as a team. There was plenty support not just on the academic side, but on the personal side as well. Support from moving to a completely new city, making me feel welcome from the start.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
There was a strong sense of a community culture, not just within my department, but as the company as a whole. Everybody was really friendly and welcoming to the new starters. Every day there was a strong, positive atmosphere coming into work, which made it fun to be there and be a part of.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I wouldn't change a thing about my placement year. I enjoyed it from start to finish and I think it is a fantastic company to do a placement year at. It was a pleasure to work with brilliant people, on real life work. The company as a whole made it enjoyable, inclusive, welcoming and a privilege to work for them.

What advice would you give to others applying to MBDA
Be yourself, be confident in your own abilities and be open minded. Take on board any feedback you receive during the online assessments. There are so many different roles within the company, so take your time to research them on the MBDA website and pick which role you think you would suit the most, and enjoy.
