Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role is varied and self-directed, involving office-based work (50%) where I attend meetings and support property-related tasks set by various teams. Around 25% of my time is spent working remotely on similar duties. The remaining 25% involves nationwide site visits, from scoping for redevelopment to snagging inspections. The flexibility of the role allows me to focus on areas aligned with my interests and university modules, providing broad exposure across the property development process
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
While much of my placement involved shadowing professionals to gain a broad understanding of the business, I was also trusted with meaningful responsibilities. I took the lead on several tasks and small projects, allowing me to work independently and apply my knowledge.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I’ve developed both technical and soft skills. I’ve improved my confidence in corporate settings, including taking and distributing meeting minutes and presenting ideas professionally. I’ve enhanced my Excel skills and gained some experience using AutoCAD. Additionally, I completed Unite’s placement programme, which included workshops on interview techniques, CV writing, and presentation skills—helping me to further develop my professional communication and employability.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I’ve received great support during my placement. My manager is amazing both professionally and personally, with monthly check-ins that help me feel valued and guided. The wider team has also been supportive and approachable. Additionally, I have an Early Careers Advisor and seven fellow placement students to connect with. While they’re based in Bristol and I’m in London, which limits in-person interaction, regular chats help maintain a strong sense of support and connection.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is the best I’ve experienced. There’s a strong team mindset where everyone supports each other to achieve shared goals. Collaboration is encouraged, and no one hesitates to help when needed. Achievements are regularly celebrated, creating a positive and motivating environment. We also have regular socials, which help build strong relationships across teams and make the workplace enjoyable and welcoming. Overall, the atmosphere is inclusive, supportive, and genuinely uplifting.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I’ve really enjoyed my placement overall. I’ve had fantastic exposure—visiting over 30 properties, attending networking events, and getting involved in a wide range of tasks like snagging, planning committees, and conferences. I’ve met so many professionals and gained valuable hands-on experience. The only downside has been occasional feelings of isolation, as the London office has an older demographic and all other placement students are based in Bristol, which has limited the social aspect of the experience. Still, the experience has been incredibly rewarding

Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Unite Students
My advice is to be open-minded and proactive. Show genuine interest in the student housing sector and be ready to get stuck into a wide range of tasks. Build strong relationships with your team—they’re incredibly supportive and knowledgeable. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance. Also, try to connect with fellow placement students early on, even if they’re in different locations—it really helps with support and making the most of the experience
