Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Received most of my work from my supervisor at the beginning of each day or carrying on from previous days. Included tasks such as redlining, drafting legal research notes, and proofreading activities. Had at least one event every day, usually being a 'Meet the Team' session with one of Gibson Dunn's practice groups, and sometimes other social events as well. Lots of daily interactions with employees at the firm, who were all really friendly and welcoming.
Also had a separate group presentation which we worked on outside of work, to be assessed in the final week.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Really interesting. There was a real effort made to give us the opportunity to see the firm in its entirety, meeting people from all the various teams and relevant social events to get to know people on a more meaningful level too.
It was really interesting in particular to see the growth of the London office and the potential for a lot more opportunity as the firm continues to grow as well. Overall, a really enjoyable experience as everyone was very friendly and eager to get to know me and to offer insights into the firm.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Yes, definitely. Improved my research skills a lot, in particular learning how to structure a note effectively and conduct legal research using the appropriate tools. Attention to detail was also developed through proofreading extremely long documents.
My social and interpersonal skills also definitely improved over the course of the scheme, as there were lots of opportunities to meet new people and to network. Also, working in teams, through the group presentation and working with my supervisor.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Extremely friendly and welcoming. Everyone was eager to chat when bumping into them in the hallway, and there was not a sense of competition or any rudeness coming from anyone at all, which was really refreshing and made it seem like a really lovely place to work.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
As much as possible I think. It's definitely important to just throw yourself in there and get involved in as much as possible. But even if you don't I think the Graduate Recruitment Team and rest of the firm make the effort to make it a really enjoyable experience regardless. Would highly recommend.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP
Be friendly, outgoing and self-confident. It's really important to be an enjoyable person to work with at the firm I think and also not to take yourself too seriously (although of course take all the work and application process very seriously). Just be yourself overall and be open to experiences.
