Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
In my day-to-day role, I am responsible for conducting audits and preparing reports for a range of clients. This involves assessing their risk exposure and evaluating the effectiveness of their mitigation strategies. I use various methods to carry out these assessments, including benchmarking against similar organisations and identifying gaps in their control frameworks. Where necessary, I provide recommendations to strengthen these controls and enhance overall risk management.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Within just 4 to 6 weeks of starting my role, I was already demonstrating a high level of responsibility by independently completing fieldwork for both draft and final reports. These reports were submitted directly to clients, and the work I produced during this early period was included in the deliverables shared with them.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Recently, I’ve developed new skills in risk mapping and holistic risk assessment. This broader perspective has enabled me to identify risks that might otherwise go unnoticed, providing a more comprehensive understanding of potential vulnerabilities. Additionally, I’ve significantly improved my time management skills. Working under tight deadlines has taught me to prioritise tasks effectively and ensure timely completion of work without compromising quality

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
During my placement year, I found that overall, I would have benefited from more consistent support. At times, certain skills were expected without sufficient guidance on how to develop them. More frequent check-ins from management could have provided valuable direction and helped bridge those gaps. When I did have the opportunity to work closely with a manager, I felt I had a clearer understanding of the tasks at hand. However, these instances were limited, and I often found myself unsure of how to approach certain responsibilities independently.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed certain aspects of my placement, particularly the opportunity to learn about the role and explore different sectors. While not every part of the experience was equally engaging, I would say that, to a certain extent, I found the placement enjoyable and valuable for my development.

What advice would you give to others applying to RSM
I would definitely recommend exploring all areas of the business, especially during a placement year. It's important to take the initiative early on and communicate your interests to management. RSM is very supportive when it comes to rotating roles and can accommodate your preferences if you're proactive about it. Equally important is asking for help when needed. If you're not comfortable approaching your manager directly, consider speaking with a buddy or a more junior team member who may better understand your perspective and provide guidance.
