Supply Chain Planning Review

The role involves helping plan and manage different drug portfolios. This includes communicating cross-functionally and with external organizations to ensure a timely supply. Daily tasks include data analysis, meetings, emails and utilizing excel workbooks. There are many projects you can ask to get involved in across the different Supply Chain functions and you are encouraged to reach out regarding any you are interested in being involved in.

After my first few weeks I was given the responsibility to manage one of the drug portfolios. This was a huge responsibility and meant I was making meaningful contributions to the team whilst also feeling that the team trusted my abilities. Additionally, I was allowed to contribute and lead a few projects outside of the role's direct responsibilities. Overall, I was given a lot more responsibility than I had previously expected - this was a pleasant surprise!

Skills in planning systems such as Rapid Response and Oracle OPM were learnt throughout the role and training from the company was great. Use of Microsoft Excel is essential and numerous training sessions were set up allowing me to develop my existing skills. Communication is another indispensable skill that was developed by attending meetings and contributing my own ideas. Organization is another skill I have greatly developed due to tight deadlines and constant new tasks arising - meaning task prioritization is needed.

I received a huge amount of support from my manager and team throughout my placement. If I ever had a question or was unsure about a task I never hesitated to reach out for some guidance. I had weekly and bi-weekly check-ins with my line managers which allowed me to raise anything I felt I needed support with. My manager constantly checked on me throughout my year and we set out goals at the beginning of my placement and checked on my progress quarterly. The team are always happy to help each other - always checking in on each other to ensure no one is overloaded with work.

The company has a very welcoming and warm culture. This is fostered by social hours and team outings to ensure everyone gets involved and that networking is possible. I think everyone in my team is a genuinely lovely person and made me feel included instantly. The atmosphere in the office is very open and light with wellness hour encouraging a work-life balance.

I absolutely loved my placement year at Vertex. The company and team were so kind, and the role provided me with loads of different opportunities to foster my professional development. The year has flown by (in a good way) and I feel I have learnt many invaluable skills as well as experience a professional environment.
