Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am actively involved in various areas of HR, including Learning and Development, creating and implementing policies and procedures, and managing the recruitment and onboarding of new starters. Beyond my core responsibilities, I regularly support other teams, such as the Business Admin team and the Marketing team, collaborating on tasks that ensure smooth operations and cohesive branding.
Additionally, I’ve taken on projects that require cross-functional coordination, such as assisting with health and safety compliance, optimising administrative systems, and contributing to employee engagement initiatives. My role is dynamic and allows me to continuously broaden my skills and make a meaningful impact across the organisation.
A big part of Coreus is its vibrant culture, and as the People and Culture team (HR—me!), I play a key role in fostering that atmosphere. I ensure things stay light and enjoyable by organising internal social activities, like our upcoming bake-off and sports day. These events bring everyone together, strengthening our sense of community and making Coreus a great place to work and why I love my job so much.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
One day I might be drafting a policy or procedure and researching how it aligns with industry standards to ensure compliance while staying true to the 'Coreus Culture.' The next, I could be collaborating with the Marketing team to brand our website. I love the variety in my work and the fact that no two days are the same.
I also enjoy going to college once a week, where I get to interact with businesses from both private and public sectors. It gives me perspective and makes me appreciate the freedom I have in my role to shape it in my own way. Unlike those working in the public sector, where rigid structures often limit flexibility, my role allows me to explore multiple areas, rather than being restricted to a single focus, such as recruitment or HR.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Although I had no prior HR experience, Coreus and my team have helped me grow in confidence, enabling me to draft contracts at all levels and research potential industry-leading benefits—which Coreus is renowned for. I’ve developed key skills to navigate challenging situations at work and gained the ability to assist other departments when needed.
One of my biggest achievements in the past seven months has been leading the project to find a health and safety advisor. I managed the entire process, from start to finish, conducting interviews and preparing a detailed report for the board, which has since been approved. Additionally, I’ve taken ownership of administrative tasks to ensure systems are properly set up, helping the team align and get on board smoothly.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I find that my programme at Exeter and my role at Coreus align incredibly well. Recently, we’ve been studying the employee lifecycle at college, which ties directly into my responsibilities at Coreus. College has given me a deeper understanding of the importance of each stage—what to do, what to avoid, and how every step impacts the overall experience. Learning about how other businesses approach it has been so valuable, and I’ve brought some great ideas back to Coreus to tailor to our unique culture.
Now that we’ve moved on to studying culture, I’m especially excited! Since I play a big part in organising Coreus' internal calendar, I can’t wait to hear new ideas on how to maintain and evolve our culture as we continue to grow. With events like our bake-off and sports day already lined up, I’m looking forward to exploring even more ways to keep fostering connection and engagement within the team.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel incredibly supported by both my employer and my manager. I have a close relationship with my manager, where no question is ever considered silly. He encourages me to tackle tasks head-on and ensures my progress is recognised during PDPs. Thanks to his support, I’ve already received two pay rises and a bonus in just seven months with the company.
I also value the unlimited learning and development opportunities I’m given, as long as they’re justified. The CEO is always encouraging me to attend courses or webinars to grow my skills. Beyond that, I love the freedom I have to shape my role. I’m not confined to a single area—I get to collaborate across different departments, which keeps my work exciting and varied.
One final point I’d like to mention is how much the CEO actively shows appreciation for our efforts. For instance, we have an 'Enabling Services' team meal next week to say thank you for our hard work, as well as opportunities like tickets to rugby, cricket, and other events. It’s these gestures that make me feel truly valued and motivated in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My tutor at Exeter College has been incredibly supportive and approachable. She’s always just an email away and adapts each lesson to suit our needs. Her knowledge and understanding have made a real difference in my learning experience.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification through Exeter College has been such a valuable asset in helping me perform better in my role at Coreus. For example, studying topics like the employee lifecycle has given me a deeper understanding of the importance of every stage. It’s helped me take a more thoughtful and effective approach to processes I’m directly involved in, and I’ve even brought back ideas from class discussions to tailor to Coreus' culture.
The alignment between what I learn at college and my work responsibilities is fantastic. It’s allowed me to see the bigger picture in HR, not just what to do, but why it matters. Engaging with businesses from different sectors during lessons has also been eye-opening. Hearing how other organisations handle challenges has inspired me to bring fresh and innovative ideas into my role. I feel like the knowledge I’m gaining is making a real difference in how I approach and grow in my work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We organise a sports day and rounders evening, and as part of our sponsorship of Somerset Ladies
- Heather Knight, we also attend cricket matches at the club. Similarly, through our partnership with the Exeter Chiefs, we support and follow Immanuel Feyi-Waboso meaning we get tickets for there too!
One of the highlights on our calendar is the 'Annual Away Day.' The morning is dedicated to business updates, workshops, and company discussions, while the afternoon features team-building activities such as laser clay pigeon shooting, allowing everyone to unwind.
Additionally, we host a weekly paddle club and hold monthly competitions, including table tennis and pool tournaments. These events add a fun and competitive element to our workplace culture.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Coreus to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Making the move from sports therapy to this company to do HR felt like such a leap at the time, but I couldn't ignore how much the culture and people resonated with me. The CEO's accessibility and genuine care were a big part of what drew me in, and I’ve come to appreciate that it’s not just a front—it really is a company that values its employees, even in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
The unlimited holiday pay and other thoughtful benefits are just the surface. It’s the sense of being part of something bigger, where everyone is supported, that makes all the difference. Looking back, I’m proud of taking that chance. It hasn’t always been easy to adapt, but knowing the company truly cares has made it worth it.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Coreus?
Be authentic and let your individuality shine, that's the key to making an impact. Show how your unique experiences and skills align with the company's values.
