Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As part of the commercial team, I manage my own projects from a commercial perspective. My role involves negotiating subcontractor packages, assessing and submitting valuations to clients, and pricing variations for client approval. I also handle the assessment of subcontractor applications and issue corresponding payment notices for completed works.
I’m responsible for setting project budgets and closely monitoring them throughout the project. I prepare and maintain cashflows, with a constant focus on maximising revenue, minimising costs, and mitigating risks.
I produce and maintain CVRs to track project revenue, costs, and forecasted margins, which I regularly report to my Commercial Manager. While I’m based in the office, I also spend time on-site to keep up to date with project progress.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy work and the team i work with, and look forward to coming in every day. i have also begun to be given more responsibilities which I am really looking forward to doing.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I started straight from GCSE so all of the above listed are new / developed skills from when i started my apprenticeship, through the help of my workplace colleagues and mentors. I feel like recently i have gained a greater construction knowledge, especially from a commercial sense and starting to become a fully qualified and competent surveyor.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very organised. Our social value manager always checks in and makes sure I am on track with my apprenticeship and hitting specific goals set. Furthemore, through annual personal development reviews, I can review how well i am doing and things i can improve on with my manager which allows me to become a better QS.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Lots of support. If I am ever stuck with anything, the work environment makes you feel comfortable to ask questions on how to deal with any situation. With regards to my university degree, work has given me additional time to get on with my dissertation and assignments as i come close to the end of my degree, which I am extremely grateful for.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Anglia Ruskin has been very helpful and there lectures are insightful. When ever I have asked a lecturer for help they have always steered me in the right direction.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It's given me a greater understanding of construction as a whole, especially looking at different types of Quantity surveyors such as PQS (client side) which i would not have gained through work as we are Main contractors.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We have a break out room at work which everyone can get together and play darts or table tennis at lunch, which i feel brings people more together and gives you a break from your day to day job. Work also plans activities out side of work whether that is an activity, going to an event or meeting up after work or on the weekend for a drink which i feel is good team bonding.
