Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
So far I've worked in Fleet Maintenance and Property Development, but placements are offered all over the business - including buses, trams, tube, IT, marketing, business services, sustainability, supplier management. I draft procurement documents, organise supplier meetings, go on site visits, run reports, and have plenty of development opportunities.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Transport for London is a great place to work. Amazing travel benefits, a huge, exciting and flexible organisation. Countless opportunities to visit different sites, work extra shifts on the operational network, meet different colleagues. CIPS teaching is straightforward and focuses, and very manageable alongside my job.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I've learnt new skills in all aspects or procurement. I've been given the opportunity to develop existing transferable skills (copywriting, communication, meeting organisation, excel/reporting), and had the freedom to pursue my own projects. The things I learn during my off-the-job learning days help me with my work.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
There is plenty of variety and you are given lots of responsibility over your learning and in your job role, but with clear objectives and goals so there is always a clear structure helping you succeed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
You have to be pro-active and independent, but this is a good thing! There is plenty of support available from tutors, sponsors, managers, who will encourage you to pursue and expand upon your interests.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The training provider organises regular teaching and revision sessions for each module. Exams are spread out over two years, so the workload is very manageable. Tutors and mentors are available if you ever need them.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification gives me the knowledge I need for my practical role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
The extra-curriculars are really good. We have a Grad and Apprentice committee (a bit like a student union), and we organise very regular socials, networking sessions, mentoring, mental health support, football teams, walks. Outside of the apprentice community, TfL has colleague network groups and clubs for all sorts of things. You can also train as an ambassador, and then work at Underground stations during busy events for a bit of extra money.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a supportive, iconic employer with security and development opportunities.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
There are lots of recruitment rounds. Really think carefully about all the answers you are giving as it is pretty tough! Research the role you are applying for and TfL in general, including their vision and values. Really think about the answers you give: do they reflect what you're really like, and do they sound like what the recruiter is looking for?
