Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work in Real Estate broking client service teams at a large London broker. I deal with retail markets so we are the first point of contact for our clients. I typically perform basic admin tasks such as writing reports, pulling statement of accounts from our database, servicing basic client requests and notifying insurers of any changes in the client's risks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The company I am in is incredibly supportive, both from the perspective of the early careers team who oversee my programme as well as the team that I work in on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes the workload is tough to balance with my apprenticeship work, but that is that nature of the business I am in where task load varies on a daily basis.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt how to better articulate and communicate across email such as differing the language used between the client, insurers and internal colleagues. I have also developed a lot of my soft skills such as time management and prioritising tasks, as well as improving my excel skill set significantly.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The Early Careers team are really good at organising teaching/learning sessions for my cohort and I and setting time aside to make sure that we are keeping up-to-date with everything. However on Davies' side it can be quite frustrating with the monthly learning tasks that seem repetitive and sometimes pointless when I am in a period of busy workload. We are supposed to have 6 hours a week dedicated to apprenticeship work but we are expected to manage this ourselves. It is sometimes very hard to find this time when the nature of real estate broking is typically high-volume urgent tasks.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
As already mentioned, the Early Careers team are really good at organising teaching/learning sessions for my cohort and I and setting time aside to make sure that we are keeping up-to-date with everything as well as making sure our mental wellbeing is paid attention to. My manager is also very good at providing feedback to help me improve as I progress.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Davies organise plenty of meetings to make sure that we are keeping up to date and to provide any support/advice if we are struggling. They have their own archive of information that we can use to help study for our qualification which is great, though some of it rolls onto our mandatory tasks which is sometimes takes up time that could be better spent elsewhere.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It definitely helps on the studying side where there are aspects that I will never learn through my day-to-day tasks and experience, such as how insurers and underwriters function differently to us as brokers and how Lloyd's/the London Market operates. Though as expected there are plenty of things that I will only be able to learn through my daily tasks and not through my qualification provider.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of networking events that are hosted both internally and across the whole insurance industry for me to attend. There are also multiple sports teams and charity competitions to get involved in internally and externally as well as charity events to help out the local community and promote stronger relationships.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Lockton to a friend?
Yes
Why?
We are one of a few large insurance brokers that are privately owned, meaning that we do not need to focus on our shareholders (as we do not have any) and can focus primarily on our clients, ultimately providing exceptional service without compromise. Everyone who works here is incredibly kind, friendly and willing to help out, highlighting our 'caring culture'
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Lockton?
Be yourself. It matters more to be a genuine human being than to fake your personality to get to where you want to be professionally. When everyone is unique and true to themselves it helps to promote a diverse and interesting workplace culture. Lockton's caring culture means everyone will support you on your journey, just make sure to speak up when things get tough otherwise no one will know how to help.
