Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I rotate around the different areas of the factory, learning the techniques and processes used for making each product. This can be anything from making the pushbuttons used for crossing roads, the different lights for the traffic lights, or even making and testing the individual circuit boards that are used in every product. The current engineering apprentices, including me, are also making a Greenpower car to race as a side project to help learn about project planning and management, which is really fun.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I think it's great! The rotations are good as it means you aren't stuck on the same thing so you don't get bored, the people are really nice and I can feel myself improving my work every day. I enjoy the work and I'm glad I applied.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed a lot of skills. For example, I have done a lot of soldering while I was working in the PCB (printed circuit board) area and now I can solder to a professional standard, whereas before I wasn't great. I have also developed my mechanical knowledge and way of thinking so I can normally figure stuff out by myself now instead of having to be told exactly what to do.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
We have a specific timetable for when we move to different areas, and we have a competency sheet to show that we have been successful in each area or we've received the training on each part because there are a lot of different processes even in the same section. College is every Monday and we have allotted time for our side project, so all in all it's pretty well organised.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I was born with club foot so some of the tasks in the factory are actually quite difficult for me, but when I told them they were really nice about it and have helped me a lot. They even brought me in before my start date to help me get the best pair of safety shoes for my foot and I'm really grateful.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
We have college reviews with our main assessor every few months to make sure we are keeping up with work and to talk about how we are doing at work and at college and if we have any issues with anything. There is also a whole network of people at the college we can speak to if we are struggling.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
For me, it has helped in developing the way I think about certain problems or tasks, which has helped me become much more efficient and autonomous. It has also helped me understand certain processes better, which has made it easier to do my jobs, and has made me feel more confident at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There is a pool table in the main office building that I normally go to at lunch to play against the other apprentices and some other people that go there which is really fun and a good way to relax for a bit. There is also a running club on Wednesdays, and there is a football team as well.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Yunex Traffic to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It's good work, good pay for a first year apprentice, and there is a lot of room to go further if you want to. My apprenticeship is level 3, but I have the opportunity to go on to the level 4, or even degree, if I do well, and they have a 100% rate of offering the apprentices permanent employment at the end of it.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Yunex Traffic?
You don't have to have perfect grades or anything (having them doesn't hurt though) as apprenticeships are about learning. As long as you are willing to learn and work hard you'll do great here!
