Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I currently work on a large scale rail project. My day-to-day tasks involve collaborating with the engineering team to produce documentation which I then manage through to discussing with the client. I often have meetings with my project team and can be flexible in my role to assist where necessary.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
The programme on the University side could be more engaging, it would be nice to see more of a link between my studies and day-to-day role.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt various new skills through my work on projects but also through additional activities offered by Mott MacDonald. I do believe however that due to lack of exposure to a range of projects the skills I have acquired have been somewhat limited. If there was a rotation programme in place this would be different.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme has improved in terms of organisation, in the beginning it was very unclear and there was misunderstanding between my employer and the course provider. For Mott MacDonald, they could have a clearer structure in place to ensure apprentices tick of all key competencies - though I appreciate this is difficult in an industry where projects are not always guaranteed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive good support from my employer, my Line Manager is in place to help with any concerns or questions I may have. Each apprentice should also have a mentor in place to help with professional development. Everybody is very eager to help and more senior colleagues are open providing more experience for those who ask.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive good support from my Skills Coach, whose job it is to bridge the gap between employer and training provider. Support from lecturers has been mixed, some are better than others. There is often mixed marking and, as I am currently experiencing, receiving a response on any queries can be difficult.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Personally my role is what helps me perform better in my qualification. I find it difficult at times to link what I am learning to real life situations within the organisation. The concept of a consultancy seems to be misunderstood by some lecturers and they do not appreciate we are not completing internal projects and instead working on behalf of clients.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, many. Each office has a dedicated Sports and Social Committee which controls their own budget and decides on activities. When you join as an apprentice you will partake in a 2 year programme which allows you to network with other Grads/Apprentices - these are great events and a really nice way to meet others around the business. Each year there is a company wide Sports Day, every office comes together for the weekend and competes in various sports - highlight of the year.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Although there are some areas of the apprenticeship that could be fine-tuned I still thoroughly enjoy working at Motts. The culture is unlike any other business and it really does have a small-company feel where everyone feels valued.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
Company values are very important, you need to be able to show you are passionate and eager to grow.
