Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
I spent half of my scheme in a transactional team and the other half in disputes, as the firm wants interns to experience both sides of their practice. As well as getting tasks from my specific supervisors, I was encouraged to reach out to any practice area which interested me. The work was accompanied by plenty of socials and talks to learn more about the firm, its culture and the profession.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was really interesting and it did not feel draining. Whilst hearing about so many departments in such a short span of time may sound daunting, the nature of the work which the firm does and the level of passion with which each lawyer speaks about their practice makes it easy to enjoy learning about the business of the firm.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
The scheme was really helpful in helping me develop my time-management skills, as I had to balance work from various teams as well as my assessed tasks. However, at no point I was overloaded with work to the point of not being able to attend talks or having to miss deadlines, there was always a way to get things done with the right balance.
The many socials and networking opportunities also developed my communication skills.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was really supportive. It was very clear that everyone in the firm worked hard, but even clearer that no matter the time of day, client or workload the employees were faced with, being nice remained an imperative at Gibson Dunn. It was a great balance between a high-performing and a lovely environment.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight. Every employee at the firm was willing to make time to explain the nature of their work and let you know why they love what they do so much. It felt really nice being in an environment where you feel like the company wants you to ask questions, and isn't just answering them to be professional.
