Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Conversing with relevant stakeholders to aid projects. Managing my own projects to get the desired result. Rotating around placements, resulting in roles adapting o get a more holistic view of Howdens.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Very much, it gives me a nice balance of university work while getting the practical business side to apply my learnings. Combine this with the self-management of projects, it allows me to make my projects my own and succeed in areas I want to.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes. I have learnt new skills such as risk assessment writing and overall improved Health and safety via IOSHH managing safely. In addition, I have developed skills such as confidence, presenting to groups, time management and many more skills

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Well structured. The standard weekly structure is 4 days doing work for Howdens and 1 day doing the university work. This is a good balance of uni/ practical work and allows me to apply my uni learnings very well, alongside making progress on my projects.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
A good amount, I have bi-weekly check ins with my line manger. Alongside, a meeting with the HR director roughly every quarter. Having these check ins in addition to colleagues who I can talk to date to date about issues means I feel Howdens gives me a good support system.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I have monthly check ins with my Professional development expert, this allows us to discuss progress and next steps in addition to setting goals for the next meeting. My PDE is also contactable by email at all times and we have a quarterly meeting with my line manager. This allows for full 360 support between Corndel and Howdens.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification is adding to my performance in my role, it covers necessary skills such as time management, leadership and communication. These skills are imperative to success in my role and I can see the theoretical aspects of the learning coming out when I complete my role, this didn't occur before.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is many events hosted by Howdens for example a Family fun Day, this event includes food and activities off-site for employees and their families. There is also a yearly rounders tournament that allows anyone to join a team. Howdens also holds a Kids and adults christmas party, this is a good chnace to meet new people and socialise outside of work hours. A final activity Howdens does is their depot incentive, where teams are given money to go and complete a activity together e.g. go karting, outside of work.

Why?
Innovative big business, that looks after their staff. All other employees and leadership are friendly and it really does feel like a home away from home, the moto used by many senior leadership. Howdens prides itself off improving and giving opportunities to their employees.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Howdens?
Everyone is veer welcoming so just be yourself and say yes to all opportunities.
