Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I have a STEM background and joined the bank as a Deaf digital accessibility apprentice to use what I learned in real life. I support with audits, learn about WCAG standards and work with the brand team. I also share my lived experience in the Sign Language working group to help make build awareness.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my apprenticeship because it allows me to apply my coding and presentation skills. As a Deaf person using BSL, I am passionate about accessibility, especially with WCAG guidelines. The work is rewarding, and I feel valued and included in the team while making designs more inclusive and given the opportunity to present my lived experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I studied computer engineering at university, where I gained skills in coding, presentation and self study. As an apprentice at HSBC, I have developed new skills in coding an accessibility, focusing on WCAG guidelines. I continue to apply real-world coding practices and enhance my presentation skills through self-study and collaboration.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My apprenticeship programme is organised and structed. It offers clear guidance on tasks and goals, and regular support and feedback from the team. The learning process is balanced, allowing me to apply new skills while having opportunities to develop. I feel supported and challenged.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive strong support from my employer. The team always supports my work, gives feedback on my projects, and provides guidance. I feel encouraged to ask for help when needed. They ensure I have the resources to succeeds. The whole team is committed to my career growth and apprenticeship learning.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive good support from my training provider. They check on my progress, assist me understand the learning material and provide feedback on my work. They are always available if I have questions and guide me step by step to help me achieve my qualification.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The training provider I received has been very helpful in my role. It gave me practical skills and knowledge that I use daily, making my work easier and more efficient. The hands-on learning and clear guidance have boosted my confidence and helped me handle tasks and challenges effectively.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, my workplace offers various extra-curricular activities to get involved in, such as social events, volunteer day and professional networking events. Additionally, professional networking events offer opportunities to learn from others, share knowledge, and grow both personally and professionally. These activities provide great opportunities to connect with colleagues, and develop both personally and professionally
