Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Creating on the day content for the BBC news website and pitching ideas for original journalism, responding to breaking news.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I loved it from start to finish. It changed mine and my families life forever and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I cannot praise the BBC as an employer enough.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve learnt too many things to mention - improved as a writer, video editor, photographer. Improved editorial judgement.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
It was very well organised considering work was semi hybrid after the pandemic when I started. I was supported and supervised throughout.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
As much as needed. I have regular check ins with my manager, any new changes or developments are explained to me and my individuality is celebrated through work based programmes for example for the LGBTQ community or those from under privileged backgrounds
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Lecturers were great, always available to me for questions. They were encouraging of my work and talked me through some tricky moments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
There’s no way I could do my job without it. Knowledge of the law relating to journalism is absolutely essential and I gained all that knowledge from the training aspect of the apprenticeship.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes absolutely - as mentioned before there are individual networks for any group or community you can imagine. There are regular formal and informal meet ups and everyone is so friendly and it feels like we are a true team - not just a buzzword

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They’re so supportive, the salary is competitive, you’re given so much training and encouraged to move around the business and learn all the time. I have nothing negative to say about the BBC as an employee.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Stick with it. I know it’s hard, I was rejected for 5 years before being successful. Say yes to any opportunity, even if it’s not what you maybe expected, because you can learn things from every story and assignment you do. I had to work for free for a long time before coming to the BBC but all that work prepared me and gave me skills no one else had.
