Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My role includes (but not limited to):
Taking care of children, including - changing nappies, helping them get dressed/undressed, assisting with toileting, applying suncream, administering first aid.
Setting up and completing a wide range of activities in the room or garden.
Speaking to children's parents/carers about children's development, any concerns, home life, what their day was like, etc.
Helping the children go to sleep at nap time. Doing the laundry of the sheets afterwards.
Risk assessments, garden checklists, filling out incident and accident forms, completing regular headcounts throughout the day.
Updating the Family App of the childrens day, what they ate and how much, toileting accidents, and uploading photos of the children for the parents to see.
Being the Meal Time Lead - Completing handover with the chef on what food the children are being served, and ensuring it is served to them at the correct temperature.
Cleaning up the room after mealtimes - sweeping, wiping, setting up the room.
Cleaning up spillages and sweeping up messes such as soil, sand, etc.
Making sure my knowledge is up to date with regular training and staff meetings.
Getting to know the children's allergies, medical care, and other important information.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I am really enjoying my apprenticeship - I look forward to the virtual classrooms, the meetings I have with my tutor, and the activities (Off the Job Learning) I complete at work.
I also have a great relationship with the children and parents at my setting. We get along really well. I also get along really well with my team and managers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Definitely. I have learnt to become self aware of my actions and words because I have children around me that will absorb what i do and say - I have to be a good role model.
I have learnt to use my own initiative in loads of situations
I have learnt to stay calm in stressful situations
I have learnt to think of new ideas for activities
I have learnt how to speak to parents and have difficult conversations
I have learnt patience and how to be patient with children.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Very well organised and structured. On Lifetime training - aptem, it is laid out very clearly so you know what work is expected of you and when, deadlines, percentages of completed work, an estimated deadline, and lots of resources to help complete my work, and extra learning I'd like to complete.
The only thing I'd say - it can be hard to communicate with the tutor. This is just purely because they are busy with other students, and occasionally, they may take a while to mark my work and reply to my messages/emails.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
If I ask my employer questions, she will respond to me quickly, and will make sure I understand the answer. However, she does not always have time to help with my coursework. This is purely because she is busy and we are currently understaffed, so I understand. But, we should be having more 1:1 meetings to communicate how I am getting on with my work, what she thinks of my practice, how can I improve, what I can do, etc. If i raise a concern or query to my manager she will help and make time for me if possible, but usually I am the one to first instigate the talk.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My tutor is very pleased with my work ethic so far. She speaks about where my qualification could take me in the future - nannying, teaching assistant, working at other nurseries, room leader, SENCo, etc. My tutor supports me very well with teams meetings teaching topics, we had one recently on Holistic Development. She makes it fun, and adds a quiz at the end to test my knowledge. The only negative thing I can say is when i submit my work (that i work really hard on!) her feedback is usually just 'thank you', without any feedback, good or bad. My old tutor (before I had my current one) used to be really complimentary of my work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Lifetime Training Aptem - each month, there are different topics and subjects to learn, and Early Years is a huge topic, so I like that Aptem has broken it down into smaller sections, and at the end of it, they will all link together. The different learning objectives help me perform better in my role by making me aware of what is expected of me. For example, The Key Person Approach. This module on Aptem tells you how to be a key person, what your roles and responsibilities are, and why are they so important for children's development.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
No

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Bright Horizons to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Uniform provided
Good pay
Opportunities to grow - room leader, SENCo, Management
Very clear polices, training, First Aid training, and good work ethic.
Great resources for the children, everything is provided for you.
If you buy something for the nursery (needs approval first), you get your money back fast.
Everyone is kind, supportive and wanting to help.
Parents trust us with their children in our care.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bright Horizons?
Working in childcare in general is hard work - the hardest job I have ever had. However, it is worth it. Working at bright horizons makes me feel proud that I am coming into work, and making a huge difference to children's lives. I feel valued at work, our manager appreciates our hard work.
My advice for working for bright horizons:
Understand that you are there for the children, and nothing else. You're not there to make friends, chat, and dilly-dally. We are passionate about children's safety, respect for children and staff, and having a great attitude towards work. We take safeguarding and other policies and procedures very seriously. If you make a mistake, you have to be responsible and hold accountability. We work best when everyone is working hard and as a team, so be prepared to not stop all day. Communication is so important, so make sure you are always listening and communicating to the staff, parents, management about anything and everything you see/hear.
