Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a Contracts Manager at Bagnalls, I oversee multiple projects from start to finish. My role involves liaising with clients, managing operatives, ensuring quality and safety standards are met, handling project planning, budgeting and resolving issues to deliver work on time and to specification that's either self specified or pre arranged by suppliers.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme as it offers a great balance of practical experience and professional development. Every day is different, and I find it rewarding to see projects progress from start to finish. The support from colleagues and the opportunity to build new skills has made it very enjoyable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Since joining Bagnalls with no prior experience in the industry, I have developed skills in project management, customer communication, health and safety compliance, and team leadership. I’ve also gained technical knowledge of painting and decorating processes, contract administration, and problem-solving under pressure, helping projects run smoothly from start to finish.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well organised and structured, with clear guidance and regular check-ins to support my development. There’s a good mix of on-site experience and office-based learning, helping me understand all aspects of the role. The structured approach makes it easier to track my progress and build confidence over time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer. Managers and colleagues are always available to offer guidance, answer questions, and provide feedback. There’s a strong focus on personal development, with regular reviews and training opportunities, which has helped me build confidence and grow in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive okay support from Derby College while working towards my qualifications. Tutors are approachable and provide clear feedback, helping me understand how to improve. Regular reviews and structured assignments keep me on track, and there’s always someone available if I need extra help or clarification on any topics. Outlines of assignments could be set clearer and structure of how to complete tasks as per required formats could be clearer set from the start.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I feel that my qualification through Derby College directly supports my role. The coursework helps me understand key concepts like project management, health and safety, and communication, which I apply daily. It bridges the gap between theory and practice, making me more confident and effective in managing real projects. The course is broader than just painting & decorating so is interesting to understand how regulations effect other industries.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There aren’t currently any formal extra-curricular activities, such as sports teams or networking events, at work. However, there is a strong team spirit on projects, and informal social activities sometimes take place. The focus is mainly on professional development and delivering high-quality work across different sites and contracts.
