2.2/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Help technicians carry out production and refit work on the lifeboats, working independently in the final year to hopefully become a technician. Daily tasks include fitting and removing electrical equipment, looking cables and fault finding.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
I enjoy the people I work with and the work itself, the management of my apprenticeship and the management of where and what I’m doing at work has been hastily thought through and I’ll-managed throughout my 4 years

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Learned all my electrical skills and workmanship. Dabbled in mechanics and boat building also.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
Very structured at college with clear defined goals. No structure or clear management at work for the development of my skills however. Tracking where and what i’ve done was only started 2.5 years in and I still have no clear goal for what I’m working towards.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
1/5
Some managers have been supportive of my apprenticeship and helped facilitate training and learning opportunities. Other management staff seem to have no belief in me and actively hinder my progression and are reluctant for me to work independently and develop further. The ‘job at the end of my apprenticeship’ feels like a carrot on a stick sometimes as there’s no clear way for me to get there, it just feels like luck which causes a lot of anxiety
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
College lecturer was unbelievable, the best tutor and mentor I’ve ever had. Set clear goals and expectations, and helped me go further.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My qualification has taught me everything I need to know to do my job. I feel I’ll be very good in my job role after gaining some more experience on top of the qualification
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
No

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend RNLI College to a friend?
No
Why?
No assurances or plan to get a job after the apprenticeship. Unless you’re a self starter and seek out training and knowledge, it would be very easy to coast through the apprenticeship and learn very little due to there being no structure or plan for apprentice development or a plan for keeping apprentices on after, it’s reliant on staff turnover
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RNLI College?
Think carefully about what you want to get out of an apprenticeship before committing
