Summer Vacation Scheme Review

On a day-to-day basis I would work closely with the team and be set tasks by my supervisor. These tasks ranged from conducting research to formulate advice for clients, undertaking reviews of companies documents, reviewing accounts to determine the value of companies and double checking materials that are to be sent out to clients. In addition, we were asked to undertake a group project to research and present on Gateley's corporate responsibility strategy. We worked with fellow VAC schemers from other offices on this task.

Throughout the scheme Gateley put on multiple talks by the various departments. These talks explained the general work that each time undertakes as well as what a typical day would be like. There was also an opportunity to ask questions of the departments which was really useful in understanding the work life balance and life in general as a part of the team. In addition to this, the members of the team I was imbedded in were very approachable and were willing to discuss what they were working on and how the team as a whole functioned.

I have developed my communication skills by integrating with the team and working on the group project. I have also developed my organisational and research skills by undertaking the tasks set for me in the prescribed manner and to the deadlines set. I have also developed my teamworking skills as the restructuring team is a close team with work that overlaps and requires everyone to play their parts. As a final skill I developed my presentation and public speaking skills as a part of the group presentation.

The culture and atmosphere within Gateley is phenomenal. The firm prides itself on the quality of its work and maintains high standards. However, all the fee earners from junior to senior are incredibly friendly and approachable. They take their work very seriously but maintain a fun and inclusive culture. The firm places an emphasis on work life balance through flexible working arrangements and respecting peoples rest periods. They also look to ensure everyone feels supported and capable of performing their jobs and progressing in their careers.

I very much enjoyed my insight. The work was challenging and interesting but well supported. If I had any questions or issues they always sought to help me and give me the confidence to undertake the tasks. In addition to the work, Gateley put on social events after work that were a great way to unwind and network with various members of the firm. In short, my week at Gateley was one of the most enjoyable of my professional career and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested.
