Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My day to day role includes interacting with team members, internal and external solicitors and also with HMRC. My main role is currently preparing personal tax returns for a wide range of clients, including high networth and international clients. I also have the responsibility of dealing with the majority of the pre-death tax return work.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I absolutely love my programme. Though it is not without its stresses, as would be expected in any professional role, it is rewarding to be able to complete actual client work and to feel like I am having a tangible impact on my clients tax affairs and wellbeing. The taught courses are incredibly informative as well.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many skills with one of the key ones being how to communicate professionally and how to vary my language dependent on the audience I am speaking with. I have also learnt incredible amounts of technical knowledge - at a very high standard, thanks to the taught courses held by my training provider and general exposure to complex tasks in the workplace.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
It is very well organised. The training provider is absolutely second to none. Having a dedicated coach for the duration of the course is a great help and it is nice to know there is someone specific that I can come to with questions. Structure is important in my programme as it is quite a short one and I feel that the structure put in place is very comprehensive and covers the duration well.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive as much support from my employer as needed. I can delegate work to other colleagues when time gets a bit tight around exam periods and I am always able to adjust my Off The Job Training days to properly facilitate any courses which I need to attend as part of the course. I have a dedicated buddy as well who is a great help for whenever I have any queries.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a load of support. There are several different inboxes and forums where I can post queries as they come up, and get them answered promptly too. As mentioned above, having the dedicated specific coach for the duration of my programme is another excellent way in which the training provider supports me working towards my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It is absolutely invaluable to my role and really helps me to perform to the best of ability. It gives me the technical knowledge to draw on when speaking with clients or justifying the actions that I take as well as giving the confidence to know that what I am saying is correct.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are some professional networking events which I attend, when the time allows. There are also a couple of more social events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Irwin Mitchell to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are a prestigious and nationally known firm so, at the least, a very good name to have on your CV. The ethics and values of the firm are excellent too and actively practiced, rather than just being a suggestion. The policies implemented internally also clearly show that colleagues are cared for as individuals, rather than just cogs in a machine.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell?
Research the firm, and the specific role which you are applying for to make sure that it aligns with what you are looking for in a career. Do not be afraid to be yourself as that is welcomed within the firm.
