4.6/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Working alongside BBC News and Sports teams to develop journalistic skills, creating and delivering quality content for TV, online, digital, and audio.
Finding stories, securing suitable guests or contributors, shooting TV packages (+interviews), editing TV packages together, writing articles for online.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love it. Going out, meeting people and telling their stories is a joy.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes - video and audio editing, writing concisely for impact, interviewing techniques, shooting digital video on iPhone, camera techniques. How to extract the "top line" from a story.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Mostly it is well organised and structured. However, as there are three different "arms" of the apprenticeship (training with college, training with BBC Academy and working at your employer base), things can sometimes misalign or overlap.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support I've received has been fantastic and is well-suited to my needs.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I've received the utmost support from my training provider. The tutors are brilliant.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification equips me with the skills - such as essential journalism and knowledge of media law - to be able to do my job competently and confidently.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are informally organised social activities at work, and more formally organised ones through BBC Communities I believe, though this isn't something I've taken the time to look into.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Because this apprenticeship affords you some incredible opportunities and experiences that I doubt you'd find elsewhere. I've only been here for 7 months, yet I've already made some brilliant memories that will stay with me forever. And within the organisation there are some wonderfully supportive, nurturing, encouraging people who can help you develop your skills and confidence.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Be yourself, be confident.
