Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a data scientist for BBC Studios. This involves working on projects requiring data analysis and model building.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The work is more interesting than the university side, but I feel really lucky that I landed at the BBC and have been enjoying myself.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
It has been immensely helpful in building up the my skills related to core data science principles, but more importantly the way in a data scientist interacts with a business. Communicating the work I do is more important than the work itself.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The work side is well organised, the university side has its problems (although people from work are on hand to help). Although, since this is my second time going to university, I would say it's standard for how universities typically operate.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from other members in the data science team and my scheme specialist. Other data scientists help with early careers advice and technical know how.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I have an academic advisor at the university who is a lot of help when advising me on what I need for the apprenticeship requirements.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Some things are helpful, but I feel that I benefit most from working. The best part is having the scheduled time each week in which I can study.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There is a large apprentice community at the BBC who run a lot of events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I feel like the BBC cares for my well being and development and have provided lots of development opportunities. It's an odd company due to its size, history and funding structure, but that's part of the charm. The BBC has also proven it care about its employees due to the strong sense of loyalty everyone has to the business (people often stick around for a long time or leave and then come back).
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Look at what is available and apply for any apprenticeship you're interested in as there are a lots of different placements since the company is so large.
